Kolkata, May 23 (NationPress) A probe has been initiated following allegations regarding the wife of the BJP’s state president in West Bengal, who is also the Union Minister of State Sukanta Majumdar, holding two voter cards from different districts in the state.
The Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of West Bengal, Manoj Kumar Agarwal, has ordered the investigation, and district magistrates from both districts have been instructed to report their findings to the CEO's office promptly.
According to the complaint, the original voter card was issued in the Jalpaiguri district under her maiden name, Koel Chowdhury. The second EPIC card is registered in the South Dinajpur district under the name Koyel Majumdar.
An insider from the CEO's office indicated that when she registered as a voter in South Dinajpur after marrying, she may have submitted incorrect information, failing to disclose her original EPIC card from Jalpaiguri.
“In such cases, she should have completed Form-18, which would have allowed for the issuance of a new EPIC card reflecting her post-marriage surname in South Dinajpur while simultaneously cancelling her original EPIC card in Jalpaiguri. Instead, she submitted Form-6. The responsibility lies with the voter to inform the CEO's office about any updates to their names, addresses, or surnames,” stated the insider.
Interestingly, Sukanta Majumdar is a two-time Lok Sabha member representing the Balurghat constituency in the South Dinajpur district. As of the time of this report, there has been no response from him regarding the issue.
