Key Takeaways
Murshidabad, Dec 28 (NationPress) The West Bengal Police apprehended Ghulam Nabi Azad, who is also known as Robin, the offspring of Humayun Kabir, the founder of the Janata Unnayan Party (JUP), on Sunday for purportedly attacking Kabir's Personal Security Officer (PSO).
Humayun Kabir, a former leader of the Trinamool Congress and Bharatpur MLA, had previously ignited controversy by proposing the establishment of a Babri Masjid in Murshidabad. The spotlight returned to him when his PSO, Constable Jumma Khan, filed a complaint at the Saktipur Police Station accusing Robin of assault.
As detailed in the complaint, the incident reportedly occurred on Saturday morning at Kabir's ground-floor office, situated within the jurisdiction of the Shaktipur Police Station. Khan claimed he was assaulted by Robin after he sought leave from duty, with several witnesses present during the altercation.
A police team subsequently arrived at Humayun Kabir's residence to conduct an inquiry.
Following this, police officials took Robin into custody.
Authorities have confirmed that the situation is currently under investigation, with further actions to be determined based on the findings.
More information is anticipated.
Humayun Kabir has previously garnered attention for his contentious assertion about erecting a Babri Masjid in Murshidabad, which has received considerable backlash from various political factions.
He laid the foundation for the proposed mosque on December 6, coinciding with the anniversary of the Babri Masjid demolition, which led to significant public outcry. As a result of these events, the Trinamool Congress suspended him from their ranks.
Thereafter, Kabir established his own political party, the Janata Unnayan Party, and declared his intention to contest 182 seats in the forthcoming West Bengal Assembly elections.
He has also expressed interest in collaborating with Asaduddin Owaisi's AIMIM and Naushad Siddiqui's Indian Secular Front.
Earlier in the day, Humayun Kabir stated in an interview with IANS that he would take a firm stance against any attempts to provoke unrest regarding his vision of constructing a Babri Masjid in Murshidabad.
He emphasized that he is undeterred by opposition, asserting that Murshidabad has a 72 percent Muslim population, unlike Ayodhya, which he claims has only a small number of community members. On this basis, he questioned the resistance to his mosque proposal in the area.
