Kolkata, December 28 (NationPress) The son of the suspended Trinamool Congress leader and Bharatpur MLA, Humayun Kabir, identified as Ghulam Nabi Azad, was taken into custody on allegations of attacking the leader's security guard in West Bengal this past Sunday.
Authorities arrived at Kabir's home in the Murshidabad district's Shaktipur area to apprehend Azad.
In response to this incident, Kabir visited the Shaktipur police station to express his discontent and threatened to stage a protest outside the Murshidabad Superintendent of Police's office on Thursday.
Local reports indicate that Kabir was in a meeting with party associates at his office when a constable responsible for his security requested leave.
When Humayun denied the leave request, a dispute broke out between them. At that moment, Azad, also known as Sohel, entered the office and attacked the security guard, who retaliated in kind.
The constable subsequently filed a written complaint at the police station.
Following the complaint, officials from the Shaktipur police station went to Kabir's residence and detained his son, although Kabir was not present at the time.
Later, Kabir claimed that the security guard had abruptly entered his office to request leave.
"Why did the security guard come into my office, and for what reason? My son confronted him and pushed him out. The guard also retaliated against my son. He was asking for leave out of nowhere. My point is, why did he need to come into my office for this? The police went to my home and detained my son. I am heading to the Shaktipur police station to speak with them," stated Kabir.
"The police should not act in a retaliatory manner. I will wait. If they take any inappropriate actions against my son, wife, or daughter-in-law, I will announce within two hours that, starting at noon on Thursday, I will gherao the office and demand explanations. I will bring Berhampur to a standstill. Let them try to prevent me," he added.
However, a senior official from the Murshidabad district police remarked, "The constable did not request leave. An investigation into the assault on a police officer on duty is ongoing."
In light of these events, Trinamool Congress spokesperson Arup Chakraborty commented, "Kabir has admitted that his son attacked the security guard. If someone assaults an officer, police action is expected. He is unable to manage his own party's candidate or keep his security detail in check."
It’s noteworthy that Kabir was suspended from the Trinamool Congress for actions deemed "anti-party." Afterwards, he established the JUP and pledged to run in the West Bengal Assembly elections. However, his son, Ghulam, remains with the Trinamool Congress, currently serving as the chairman of the Public Works Committee for the Beldanga-II Panchayat Samiti.
