Will Bengal SIR See an Extension in Scrutiny Deadline?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Feb 17 (NationPress) The current deadline of February 21 for finalizing the ongoing examination of identity documents presented during the hearings on the draft voters list in West Bengal may see an extension of two to three days, as anticipated by the Chief Electoral Officer's (CEO) office.
Sources within the CEO’s office have indicated two primary factors contributing to the likelihood of this deadline being pushed back.
The foremost reason is the overwhelming number of “fake” and “unlisted” documents that have been submitted as proof of identity.
“In addition to the submission of documents not recognized by the Election Commission of India as valid identity proof, there have been instances of newspaper clippings, blank sheets of paper, and completely illegible documents being uploaded. Consequently, filtering out these fraudulent and unapproved documents is an enormous challenge, prompting the potential for an extension of the scrutiny deadline,” revealed an insider from the CEO’s office.
Simultaneously, he noted that the examination of documents already submitted is ongoing, alongside the input of documents that were provided at the end of the hearing session, which concluded on February 14.
“Had the submission of documents been finalized by February 14 alongside the hearing, the electoral officers could have solely focused on examining the documents. In that scenario, the chances of extending the deadline would have been minimal,” the insider elaborated.
Thus far, the Election Commission of India has pinpointed five districts within the state where there has been a significant occurrence of “unlisted” documents being submitted. These districts include Cooch Behar, Malda, Murshidabad, North 24 Parganas, and South 24 Parganas. Notably, all five districts share international borders with Bangladesh, while South 24 Parganas primarily features coastal borders.
In addition to these five districts experiencing a surge in “unlisted” documents, there have been marginally elevated irregularities in the East Burdwan and West Burdwan districts.
According to the current timeline, the final voters’ list for West Bengal is scheduled for publication on February 28. On March 1, a full bench of the Election Commission of India will undertake a two-day visit to West Bengal to assess the situation following the SIR. Shortly thereafter, the ECI will announce the polling dates for the upcoming Assembly elections in the state.
