Bengaluru, Aug 1 (NationPress) The Special Court for MPs/MLAs in Bengaluru has found ex-JD(S) MP Prajwal Revanna, who is the grandson of former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda, guilty in a case involving an obscene video and rape allegations.
The ruling was delivered by Judge Santhosh Gajanana Bhat, with sentencing scheduled for tomorrow after allowing Prajwal Revanna and his legal team to present their concluding remarks regarding the conviction.
Upon hearing the verdict, Prajwal Revanna was visibly emotional, shedding tears as he remained seated in the courtroom. Following the verdict, he was seen in distress, unable to comprehend the gravity of the situation.
The judgment had been postponed on July 30 for the court to seek further clarifications. After receiving input from both parties, the case was adjourned until today.
He has been incarcerated for 14 months following his arrest last year.
The charges stem from a rape complaint and additional allegations made by a domestic worker from K.R. Nagar against Prajwal Revanna. In total, the court evaluated 26 pieces of evidence related to the case. Furthermore, Prajwal Revanna is facing three other similar legal matters.
During the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, videos emerged that allegedly depicted Prajwal Revanna committing sexual assaults against women. After these videos surfaced, he fled the country. The initial complaint was lodged by a victim from Holenarasipura. Upon his return to Bengaluru on May 31, 2024, he was apprehended by local police.
His return followed public appeals from H.D. Deve Gowda and Union Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy. Prajwal was placed in Bengaluru Central Jail, where all of his bail applications were denied by the courts.
One of the videos that sparked significant public outrage featured the alleged sexual assault of an elderly domestic worker at a farmhouse in Holenarasipura. In this footage, the woman is heard pleading with Prajwal Revanna, stating that she had previously provided meals to his family.
The Special Investigation Team (SIT) filed charges under several IPC Sections including 376(2)(n) for repeated rape, 506 for criminal intimidation, 354A(1) for unwelcome physical contact and sexual advances, 354B for the use of force with intent to disrobe, 354C for voyeurism, and relevant sections of the Information Technology Act. Robust evidence was gathered, including the collection of the victim's clothing containing Prajwal Revanna's semen, and video recordings of the assault.
