Bhatkal tense over Moorin Katte relocation: 6 arrested, 4 FIRs filed
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Karnataka's communally sensitive coastal town of Bhatkal remained on edge on Monday, 25 May following protests triggered by the relocation of the Hindu religious site 'Moorin Katte'. Authorities have imposed prohibitory orders for three days, with police registering four FIRs and arresting six persons in connection with the unrest.
Security Deployment and Ground Situation
To contain the situation, nine platoons of the Karnataka State Reserve Police (KSRP) and three platoons of the District Armed Reserve (DAR) have been deployed across sensitive locations in the region. High drama reportedly continued in the area until midnight, prompting authorities to maintain a heavy security presence.
Police have tightened surveillance at all flashpoints and launched a further investigation into the incidents that unfolded over the weekend.
What the Police Said
Karwar Superintendent of Police M.N. Deepan, addressing the media, clarified that the original Moorin Katte religious site had not been demolished and remained intact. He released a photograph to support the claim.
'We have secured the spot and made adequate security arrangements. However, to shift the site, one of the platforms was moved,' SP Deepan stated.
He confirmed that four FIRs had been registered: one for the alleged assault on police personnel, one for blocking a national highway, one based on a complaint filed by an injured person, and a fourth over a social media call urging people to gather at the spot. 'Six persons have been arrested, and legal action will be initiated in all the FIRs. The region is peaceful now,' he added.
Background: How the Dispute Escalated
The controversy originated when Moorin Katte was marked for relocation as part of a national highway expansion project. Hindu organisations objected and staged repeated protests, following which the district administration identified an alternative site. A new structure was subsequently constructed, and videos of it circulated widely on social media.
By evening on Sunday, a group from the minority community gathered at the spot, demanding the structure be cleared. The group allegedly vandalised the site. When protesters engaged in heated arguments with officers and allegedly assaulted some policemen, police resorted to a lathi charge. Despite the action, the group reportedly continued to gather and demanded removal of the Hindu religious structure.
Political Dimension
Separately, Hindu activists staged a protest on Sunday against Karnataka Minister for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairy, Mankal Vaidya, in Bhatkal over the developments. Some activists also attempted to reconstruct the structure at the original location, following which police detained them.
This comes amid a broader pattern of communal sensitivity along Karnataka's coastal belt, where disputes over religious sites and public spaces have periodically strained inter-community relations. With prohibitory orders in place and a heavy security deployment, authorities are working to prevent further escalation as investigations continue.
