Bhopal security tightened ahead of Friday prayers after stone-pelting incidents
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Heavy security has been deployed across sensitive localities in Old City, Bhopal ahead of Friday prayers on 16 May, as Madhya Pradesh Police moved to prevent fresh disturbances following communal tension triggered by the assault on a Muslim youth earlier this week. Prohibitory orders under Section 144 remain in force, and police have warned residents against spreading or believing rumours on social media.
Security Arrangements on the Ground
Additional police personnel have been deployed across crowded localities in the Old City. Strict vigil is being maintained around major mosques, with separate security arrangements established at every gate of Taj-ul-Masajid, Jama Masjid, and Moti Masjid. Personnel have also been positioned outside Peer Gate Mosque and Kulsum Biya Mosque in Budhwara, as well as other parts of the city.
Friday prayers are scheduled between 12:40 pm and 2:45 pm IST. Bhopal Police Commissioner Sanjay Kumar confirmed that forces have been placed on high alert. 'Police will take strict action if crowds gather. Police will initiate stern measures against anyone disturbing the peace,' he said.
What Triggered the Tension
The unrest stems from the alleged assault on Arif Khan on 10 May at a hotel in Bhopal. According to police, Khan was allegedly attacked by activists linked to a Hindu organisation. He was beaten, stripped semi-naked, and had ink and cow dung smeared on his face before being handed over to police personnel.
The incident drew sharp anger from members of the Muslim community, triggering protests and incidents of stone-pelting in several areas of the Old City from Tuesday onwards. This is the kind of flashpoint that, left unaddressed, can spiral rapidly — a pattern seen in multiple Indian cities over the past decade.
Seven Accused Arrested, Sent to Judicial Remand
All seven persons named in the First Information Report (FIR) were arrested on Thursday and sent to judicial remand. The accused — Vijendra Prajapati (named as the main accused), Rohit Singh, Jeetu Kushwah, Ranjit Suryavanshi, Lala Ram Meena, Prateek, and Ramesh — have been booked under Sections 299 and 291 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for outraging religious sentiments and rioting.
Community and Police Appeals for Calm
Bhopal City Qazi Syed Mushtaq Ali Nadvi appealed to residents to maintain peace, noting that the police had acted on community demands by arresting all the accused. 'Do not take any wrongful steps under the influence of provocation or misinformation,' he said.
Commissioner Kumar urged residents not to assemble unnecessarily and confirmed that additional forces would be deployed alongside district police. Authorities are also monitoring social media closely for inflammatory content. Police stated that the investigation into the assault case is ongoing.
With all seven accused in custody and community leaders urging restraint, the immediate focus now shifts to whether Friday prayers pass without incident — and whether the investigation leads to charges that the affected community finds credible.
