Bhopal protest erupts over Muslim youth's assault at Govindpura hotel; Commissioner orders probe
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Hundreds of members of the Muslim community staged a protest in Bhopal on Tuesday, 12 May, demanding the immediate arrest of those accused of assaulting and allegedly humiliating a Muslim youth at a hotel in Govindpura two days earlier. Bhopal Police Commissioner Sanjay Kumar subsequently ordered an investigation into the incident, including into the conduct of police personnel reportedly present at the scene.
What Happened at the Hotel
The incident occurred on Sunday at a hotel in Gautam Nagar under Govindpura police station limits. According to reports, a group of men allegedly dragged out a Muslim youth identified as Arif Khan, assaulted him, stripped him half-naked, and smeared ink and cow dung on his face. The attackers reportedly accused him of being with a woman from another faith. Police said the woman stated she had been in a live-in relationship with Khan for five years and had voluntarily accompanied him.
Community Protest and Shutdown Warning
The demonstration was led by Bhopal City Qazi Syed Mushtaq Ali Nadvi and began at the Kaziyat premises, where community members gathered to condemn the attack and the alleged use of objectionable language during the incident. Protesters later marched to the Police Control Room, raising slogans and demanding strict action. The gathering carried a warning that the community would call for a city-wide shutdown if the accused were not arrested within 24 hours.
Addressing the crowd, Qazi Nadvi described the assault as an attack not only on an individual but also on communal harmony and religious sentiments. Congress legislators Arif Masood and Atif Aqueel, along with All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) leader Mohsin Ali, joined the demonstration.
What the Community Demanded
Community representatives submitted a memorandum to Commissioner Sanjay Kumar demanding immediate arrests and departmental action against police personnel allegedly negligent during the incident.
