Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary on Tuesday, 19 May chaired two high-level meetings at the Chief Minister's Secretariat in Patna, addressing two strategic priorities: tightening security along the India–Nepal border and accelerating the state's civil aviation expansion. The sessions signal a concerted push by the Bihar government to strengthen both national security infrastructure and regional connectivity.

Border Security Under the Scanner

At a review meeting held at the 'Samvad' auditorium, Chief Minister Choudhary assessed security arrangements along the India–Nepal border, characterising it as a highly sensitive zone requiring constant vigilance. Chief Secretary Pratyaya Amrit briefed the meeting on compliance with directives issued at a high-level border security review held on 26–27 February under the chairmanship of Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

The Chief Minister directed officials to deploy advanced surveillance technology, maintain heightened vigilance against suspicious movements, and crack down decisively on narcotics trafficking, counterfeit currency, and smuggling. He made clear that no laxity would be tolerated in border areas. Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai and other senior officials attended the meeting.

Key Directives on Border Management

Among the specific instructions issued, the Chief Minister called for strengthening physical surveillance and security infrastructure, integrating advanced monitoring technology, and enforcing robust action against all illegal cross-border activities. This comes amid longstanding concerns about the India–Nepal open border, which has historically been flagged as a vulnerability for drug trafficking and infiltration. The February meeting chaired by Home Minister Shah had already set the compliance framework; Tuesday's review was aimed at ensuring those directives are being implemented on the ground.

Bihar's Aviation Ambitions

In a separate session at the 'Sankalp' auditorium, Chief Minister Choudhary reviewed ongoing and proposed aviation projects with officials from the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Bihar's Civil Aviation Department. A detailed presentation by department secretary Nilesh Ramchandra Deore covered airport modernisation, air connectivity expansion, security infrastructure strengthening, and implementation of the UDAN Scheme. Senior official Samir Kumar Sinha provided inputs on runway expansion and capacity enhancement at Patna Airport.

Key proposals discussed included: runway expansion and capacity enhancement at Patna Airport; granting international status to Darbhanga Airport; the Ajgaibinath Dham Greenfield Airport project; a permanent civil enclave at Purnea Airport; development of airports in Muzaffarpur, Valmikinagar, Saharsa, and Birpur; upgradation of Forbesganj Airport; and inclusion of more airports under the UDAN scheme.

Bihar as a Regional Aviation Hub

Chief Minister Choudhary set an ambitious target to increase air connectivity in Bihar tenfold within five years. 'We are preparing a roadmap to connect all districts through air services. Bihar must emerge as a regional aviation hub in eastern India,' he said. He directed officials to expedite work on Patna Airport expansion and assured full cooperation with the central government. Notably, Bihar's push to develop multiple airports — including greenfield and international-status upgrades — represents one of the more comprehensive state-level aviation plans in eastern India.
