Bihar Government Issues Advisory Amid HMPV Concerns, Urges Precautionary Steps

Patna, Jan 7 (NationPress) The Bihar government has initiated precautionary actions to combat the potential transmission of the virus, as more than five cases of Human Metapneumo Virus (HMPV) have been documented across the country.
Bihar's Health Minister, Mangal Pandey, has instructed officials to ensure readiness, issuing directives and implementing measures throughout the state's health institutions.
The Bihar Health Department has mandated hospitals to set up flu desks and prepare for RT-PCR testing to identify the virus.
Additional instructions have been provided for the monitoring and management of HMPV, which is a respiratory infection displaying symptoms akin to Covid-19.
Pandey also emphasized the necessity for authorities to systematically monitor patients and maintain a daily report on Influenza-Like Illness (ILI) and severe respiratory infections.
"We have instructed officials to train health workers in the prevention and management of HMPV, enforce strict infection control measures at all health facilities, and ensure the availability of crucial resources such as ventilators, oxygen, Covid-19 medications, and testing kits to minimize risks," Pandey stated.
The Health Department underscored the importance of adhering to preventive measures similar to Covid-19 protocols, which include frequent handwashing, covering the mouth while coughing or sneezing, keeping distance from infected individuals, and disinfecting items used by those infected.
Health Minister Mangal Pandey recommended immediate consultation at the nearest health center if respiratory symptoms arise, particularly for vulnerable populations such as small children, the elderly, and immune-compromised individuals.
"Currently, there is no specific vaccine or medication for HMPV infection. Symptomatic treatment, including adequate hydration, rest, and oxygen support in severe cases, is crucial. The state government remains fully dedicated to preventing infection and enhancing health services," Pandey remarked.
HMPV is a prevalent respiratory infection that can affect individuals of all ages, particularly young children and the elderly.
Although no specific vaccine or antiviral treatment exists for this virus, early detection and supportive care can significantly enhance patient outcomes.
The proactive measures taken by the Bihar government demonstrate its commitment to addressing emerging health challenges.
Healthcare facilities and hospitals have been placed on high alert to manage any potential increase in cases, thereby ensuring public health safety.
