Patna, Oct 4 (NationPress) Makhana is an invaluable asset for the economically disadvantaged in Bihar, and the state is now recognized as the global leader in makhana cultivation, spanning an area of 35,000 to 40,000 hectares, as stated by Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Saturday.
The minister highlighted that in the past, makhana was cultivated on just about 3,000 hectares.
During the ‘Makhana Mahotsav 2025’ event at Gandhi Maidan, Chouhan revealed that the Central Government has officially established a Makhana Board to enhance research, development, marketing, branding, and promotion of makhana.
He mentioned that approximately Rs 475 crore has been allocated for advanced machinery, the development of new varieties, and processing facilities to elevate makhana production and its value.
Encouraging the youth of Bihar to initiate startups in the makhana industry, the Union Minister pledged comprehensive support from the Central Government.
“Our objective is to bring makhana from India to dining tables worldwide, ensuring a consistent increase in farmers’ incomes,” the minister asserted.
In his speech, Minister Chouhan noted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently delivered a historic boon worth Rs 64,000 crore to the youth, particularly those from Bihar.
“Bihar is experiencing a wave of prosperity and development — the sun of a developed India is illuminating the state's future,” he remarked.
The Union Minister also mentioned the recent increase in the minimum support price (MSP) announced by the Central Government for farmers.
He affirmed that the Centre will acquire all produce of lentils (masoor), urad, and arhar cultivated by Bihar’s farmers at MSP.
During his day-long visit to Bihar, he took part in ‘Makhana Mahotsav 2025’ and unveiled the report titled ‘Makhana: From Culture to Prosperity’ (Makhana: Sanskriti se Samridhhi).
Previously, the minister declared that starting from the academic year 2025–26, 20% of undergraduate seats in these universities will be allocated via the All India Competitive Examination conducted by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR).
The minister explained that eligibility criteria and subject groups for the entrance exam have now been standardized.
