New Delhi, Dec 16 (NationPress) India holds the title of the largest producer of makhana globally, representing almost 80% of worldwide production, as disclosed to Parliament on Tuesday.
Bihar serves as the cornerstone of the nation's makhana production, contributing around 85% of the total output, with Darbhanga recognized as a crucial center for both cultivation and processing.
In a written reply to the Rajya Sabha, the Minister of State for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Ramnath Thakur, stated that Darbhanga district has gained acclaim for its significant potential in makhana cultivation.
“Darbhanga district is widely acknowledged as a pivotal center for makhana production in Bihar, known for its strong cultivation and processing capabilities,” the minister remarked.
This district is home to the ICAR-National Research Centre on Makhana and has been included in the One District One Product initiative, emphasizing its vital role in the industry.
The minister noted that the makhana sector possesses substantial potential to enhance the economic status of farmers and fishermen, particularly in states where the crop thrives.
To harness this potential, the government has established the National Makhana Board via a gazette notification issued on September 14, 2025.
The board's objectives include improving production, processing, value addition, marketing, and export promotion of makhana across India.
He further stated that the National Makhana Board will focus on increasing productivity through scientific research, enhanced agricultural practices, and advanced harvesting and processing technologies.
These initiatives are anticipated to fortify the entire value chain, from farmers to exporters.
Additionally, the government has ratified a Central Sector Scheme for Development of Makhana with a budget of Rs 476.03 crore spanning six years, from 2025–26 to 2030–31.
This scheme will facilitate research and innovation, the production and distribution of high-quality seeds, skill enhancement for farmers and other stakeholders, improved post-harvest management, value addition, branding, marketing, and export promotion to elevate India’s share in the global makhana market.
