Why Was a Bihar Man Arrested Near the India-Pakistan Border in Jaisalmer?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Jaipur, Oct 31 (NationPress) The alertness of security forces was once again highlighted along the India-Pakistan International Border after the Border Security Force (BSF) detained a questionable individual in the Murar border area of Jaisalmer during their regular patrols.
Sources have identified the individual as Mohammad Iqbal (40), hailing from Araria district in Bihar.
The BSF personnel intercepted Iqbal late Thursday night upon observing his suspicious behavior near the border. During the initial questioning, he reportedly struggled to provide a satisfactory explanation for his presence in Jaisalmer and his approach towards the International Border.
After preliminary interrogation, the BSF transferred him to the Shahgarh police for further investigation. Law enforcement and intelligence agencies are now delving into the circumstances that brought Iqbal to this border region. Although no illegal items were found during the initial investigation, his motives remain questionable.
Following local interrogation, he will be referred to a Joint Investigation Committee (JIC), which consists of multiple security agencies, for comprehensive questioning.
Officials noted that after being detained, Iqbal began to behave erratically, resembling a “madman,” which raised further concerns regarding his mental state and intentions.
The BSF has amplified patrolling efforts along critical sections of the Jaisalmer border to avert such incidents. Security forces are maintaining stringent vigilance against unidentified individuals observed near the international boundary.
Moreover, the capture of Mohammad Iqbal contributes to a series of security breaches reported in the area. So far, five individuals have been arrested in Jaisalmer in 2025 on charges related to espionage or dubious cross-border connections.
Notably, on March 26, prior to the Pahalgam terror attack, Rajasthan Intelligence apprehended Pathan Khan, a local of Karam Ki Dhani near the Chandan Field Firing Range, under the Official Secrets Act.
On May 28, Shakur Khan, a former assistant to a Congress Minister and a government employee, was taken into custody for allegedly spying for Pakistan; he was formally arrested on June 3.
On August 4, Mahendra Prasad, a manager at a DRDO guest house, was apprehended for leaking Indian Army intelligence to a Pakistani handler.
On August 20, Jeevan Khan (25), a restaurant worker, was caught in communication with multiple Pakistani numbers stored in his phone.
On September 25, Hanif Khan was arrested for allegedly disclosing sensitive Indian Army information to Pakistan's ISI.
