Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Patna, Feb 10 (NationPress) In a surprising development, a police operation in the Chakmahesi police station jurisdiction of Samastipur on Tuesday night resulted in the recovery of a staggering sum of Rs 43,94,500 in cash, rather than the anticipated illegal liquor.
Acting on a tip-off regarding an illicit liquor operation, a police team led by Chakmahesi SHO Manish Kumar raided a hut in proximity to the Saidpur Market Committee.
While searching, officers discovered a carton tucked away in a corner of the residence. Upon opening it, they found a bag packed with tea leaves.
Upon further examination, the police uncovered bundles of currency notes totaling Rs 43,94,500.
Following this significant recovery, DSP-2 Sanjay Kumar and other senior officials were immediately notified.
The cash was meticulously counted under the guidance of a magistrate.
Interestingly, no illicit liquor was found during the operation, and the owner of the house managed to escape the scene.
Later, through relatives, the fleeing owner asserted that the cash was derived from the sale of ancestral land and promised to provide documentation.
Sadar DSP-2 Sanjay Kumar stated that due to the substantial amount of unaccounted cash, the Income Tax Department has been alerted.
An investigation into the origins of the funds is currently ongoing.
In a related incident, Patna City police confiscated Rs 32 lakh in cash from two individuals riding a motorcycle during a routine check.
This event unfolded in the Moghalpura police station area.
According to the police, when officers instructed the motorcycle riders to halt, they attempted to flee, which raised suspicions.
They were pursued, apprehended, and subsequently searched. The police recovered bundles of Rs 500 notes from their bags, summing up to Rs 32 lakh.
During interrogation, the youths claimed the money belonged to a company in Burdwan, West Bengal, stating they were en route to deposit it in a bank.
However, the police found their explanation lacking credibility.
The two individuals were taken to the police station along with the seized cash, and the Income Tax Department was notified.
Officials from the Income Tax Department will now verify their claims and investigate the ownership and origin of the recovered funds.
