Kolkata, Oct 20 (NationPress) A Bihar woman was apprehended with banned narcotics worth Rs 1.50 crore at Kaliachak in Malda district of West Bengal on Monday, as confirmed by an official.
The authorities have named the suspect Kanchan Devi, a resident of Bhagalpur in West Bengal.
On the same afternoon, she was brought before a district court in Malda, where she was remanded into police custody. Law enforcement agencies believe she is involved in a significant interstate narcotics smuggling operation.
An official indicated that the suspect would undergo further interrogation while in police custody to uncover details about her accomplices in the smuggling network.
During initial questioning, she admitted to acquiring the narcotics shipment from Malda and intended to transport it to Bihar.
Police sources revealed that the Baishnabnagar Police Station received a tip-off on Sunday regarding an attempt to smuggle a large quantity of narcotics out of the state.
Following this, investigators commenced their inquiry, leading to the discovery of the suspect loitering suspiciously at a specific intersection on Monday morning. She was apprehended for questioning.
Upon noting inconsistencies in her statements, the authorities searched her handbag and recovered 1.34 kilograms of prohibited brown sugar, estimated to be worth around Rs 1.5 crore.
Initially detained, she was taken to the local police station where more intensive questioning occurred.
“During interrogation, she revealed that she hails from Bhagalpur in Bihar and had traveled to Malda solely to collect the narcotics shipment for transport back to Bihar. We suspect she is merely a pawn in a larger interstate narcotics trafficking scheme, with Malda serving as a hub,” remarked a district police official.
