Mumbai, Oct 20 (NationPress) Legendary comic actor and Bollywood stalwart Govardhan Asrani, popularly known as Asrani, has sadly departed this world at the age of 84. The circumstances surrounding his passing remain unclear at the time of this report.

His final rites took place at Santacruz Crematorium on Monday.

Just hours prior to his death, the beloved actor shared a heartfelt Diwali message for his fans on social media.

Asrani was one of the most celebrated comic talents in Indian cinema, boasting a career that spanned over five decades and included appearances in more than 350 films. He received his training at the renowned Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) in Pune before making his mark in the Hindi film industry during the mid-1960s.

Initially, he took on serious and supporting roles, but his comedic talent soon became evident. Asrani became a fixture in Hindi cinema during the 1970s and 1980s, often portraying the endearing fool, the frazzled clerk, or the clever sidekick. His exceptional timing and expressive demeanor made him a sought-after actor for directors.

Asrani's memorable performances in iconic films such as 'Sholay', 'Chupke Chupke', and others established him as a key figure in acting.

One of his most unforgettable roles was as the bumbling jailer parodying Hitler in the classic film 'Sholay', a character that became an integral part of Indian pop culture.

Demonstrating his versatility, Asrani worked across various genres and languages, including Gujarati and Rajasthani films, and even ventured into directing a few Hindi and Gujarati productions. He created memorable comedic partnerships with fellow actors like Mehmood, Rajesh Khanna, and later Govinda, connecting generations of comedy in Bollywood.

In addition to his comedic roles, Asrani showcased his dramatic talent in films like Aaj Ki Taaza Khabar and Chala Murari Hero Banne, where he also took on directing duties. His contributions to Indian cinema extend beyond laughter; he exemplified consistency, embodying the essence of a true entertainer who evolved with time while remaining grounded in charm and simplicity.
