Gandhinagar, Oct 20 (NationPress) The Gujarat government has unveiled a substantial Rs 947 crore relief initiative aimed at supporting farmers who have been impacted by severe rainfall in August and September this year. This decision, spearheaded by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, was disclosed by Agriculture Minister Jitu Vaghani, emphasizing the administration's unwavering dedication to farmer welfare.
During a press briefing, Minister Vaghani elaborated that Rs 563 crore will be allocated in accordance with State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) regulations, complemented by an additional Rs 384 crore from the state budget, culminating in a total of Rs 947 crore.
This financial aid will assist farmers across five districts and 18 talukas, impacting nearly 800 villages that experienced significant crop destruction due to heavy rainfall. Surveys conducted by local authorities in Junagadh, Panchmahal, Kutch, Patan, and Vav-Tharad confirmed extensive losses in crops such as groundnut, cotton, millet, fodder, vegetables, pulses, and permanent crops like pomegranate. Compensation will be distributed to farmers based on SDRF and state standards.
According to the relief guidelines, farmers suffering more than 33 percent crop loss will receive Rs 12,000 per hectare (comprising Rs 8,500 from SDRF and Rs 3,500 from state funds) for non-irrigated crops, limited to 2 hectares per account. For irrigated crops, the compensation is Rs 22,000 per hectare (with Rs 17,000 from SDRF and Rs 5,000 from state funds), also capped at 2 hectares. Perennial horticultural crops will receive Rs 27,500 per hectare (inclusive of Rs 22,500 from SDRF and Rs 5,000 from state funds), again up to 2 hectares.
In addition, acknowledging ongoing waterlogging issues in the low-lying regions of Vav-Tharad and Patan, the state government has initiated a unique flood mitigation project, marking a first in Gujarat.
A preliminary budget of Rs 2,500 crore has been allocated for this project, with the possibility of increasing the budget to Rs 5,000 crore if necessary. Farmers in these regions will also receive Rs 20,000 per hectare for land restoration efforts through a dedicated state budget provision.
Minister Vaghani stated that this decision followed a series of high-level meetings led by Chief Minister Patel, even during the festive season, to ensure that no affected farmer is overlooked.
“The Prime Minister has implemented numerous measures to safeguard farmers' interests. In alignment with his vision, the Gujarat government remains committed to providing timely assistance and long-lasting solutions for our agricultural community,” he remarked.
