Bhubaneswar, April 3 (NationPress) The Biju Janata Dal (BJD), the opposition party, has launched a strong critique against the Odisha government regarding the incorporation of Palasa and Ichchapuram into the proposed Vishakhapatnam sector of the South Coast Railway zone.
The BJD claims that instead of Odisha gaining advantages under the BJP regime, which was elected with the promise of “Double Engine, Double Development,” the state is being unjustly deprived of its due share.
During the observance of Odisha Day (Utkal Divas), BJD leaders pointed out that Palasa and Ichchapuram had been transitioned from the East Coast Railway zone in Odisha to the South Coast Railway zone in Andhra Pradesh.
At a press briefing held on Friday at Sankha Bhawan (the party headquarters), Vice President Atanu Sabyasachi Nayak and Party Spokesperson and Media Coordinator Dr. Lenin Mohanty accused the BJP-led government of delivering a “Double Betrayal” to Odisha.
Nayak emphasized that the East Coast Railway is among the top revenue-generating railway divisions in India. He expressed concerns that efforts are being made to undermine it to favor Andhra Pradesh. He noted that approximately a year ago, sections of the Koraput and Rayagada districts were also merged into the South Coast Railway zone, and now during Odisha Day, Palasa and Ichchapuram have followed suit.
Despite the BJP's promises of “Double Development,” Nayak lamented that the party's leaders lack the resolve to confront this perceived injustice against Odisha. He stated, “While the East Coast Railway is being continuously diminished, Odisha’s 20 BJP Lok Sabha MPs, along with the state leadership, remain silent, which is profoundly regrettable. The people of Odisha want to understand the role of these MPs.”
Nayak also highlighted that it is unfortunate that even with an MP from Odisha serving as the Railway Minister, the state's interests are being put at risk in favor of Andhra Pradesh.
BJD spokesperson Mohanty pointed out that at least six districts in Odisha still lack railway connectivity. He demanded the complete reversal of this decision, asserting that instead of providing more for Odisha, the government is reducing its entitlements. Mohanty also called for transferring railway areas in Sundargarh, Keonjhar, and Mayurbhanj districts from the South Eastern Railway to the East Coast Railway to bolster it further.
