BJD alleges corruption in Odisha teacher promotions, demands Director's suspension
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) on Wednesday, 3 June accused the Odisha School & Mass Education Department of large-scale irregularities, corruption, and victimisation of teachers in its recent promotion and transfer exercise, demanding the immediate cancellation of the list and an independent inquiry. The Opposition party also sought the suspension of the department's incumbent Director pending investigation.
What the BJD alleged
In a press statement issued from Bhubaneswar, BJD spokesperson Lenin Mohanty claimed that promotions from the Junior Secondary Education Service (JR SES) to the Senior Secondary Education Service (SR SES) were made in 'blatant violation' of merit and the official gradation list prepared by the state government on 25 December 2025.
Mohanty alleged that several senior and deserving teachers had been overlooked, while junior teachers had reportedly secured promotions through 'corrupt practices and monetary influence'.
Concerns over women teachers' transfers
The BJD spokesperson raised specific concerns about the transfer postings of women teachers, alleging that many had been moved to distant locations without due regard to seniority, family responsibilities, or gender-related considerations.
In contrast, Mohanty claimed, several male teachers allegedly affiliated with the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had been assigned to nearby, favourable postings — in what he described as a violation of the state's existing transfer policy and principles of equity.
Pattern of controversies flagged
Mohanty argued that the exercise appeared to have been driven by 'mala fide intentions' and had caused widespread resentment among teachers across Odisha. He linked the development to a broader pattern, noting that the BJP-led government had already faced criticism over examination and paper-leak controversies in recent months.
What the BJD wants
The regional party has placed four key demands before the state government: immediate cancellation of the current promotion list; a fresh, transparent, merit-based process strictly aligned with the published gradation list and seniority norms; a patient hearing for teachers who claim to have been victimised; and a comprehensive inquiry into allegations of corruption and favouritism.
The BJD has additionally demanded the immediate suspension of the current Director of the School & Mass Education Department pending an independent probe. The state government is yet to formally respond to the allegations.
