Why Did BJP and Congress Workers Clash in Indore?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Bhopal/Indore, Feb 21 (NationPress) A number of individuals, including media personnel and police officers, were injured during a violent altercation between the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the opposition Congress. This clash reportedly occurred when both parties engaged in stone-pelting against one another.
The unrest unfolded during a state-wide demonstration organized by the Yuva Morcha of the BJP's Madhya Pradesh chapter, which was intended to express outrage over Congress workers' "semi-nude" protest at the AI Impact Summit 2026 in New Delhi last Friday.
The altercation erupted as BJP members were protesting near the Congress headquarters (Gandhi Bhavan) in Indore.
This protest was part of a larger demonstration held in Bhopal and various locations across Madhya Pradesh, where BJP supporters burned effigies of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in cities including Bhopal, Gwalior, Rewa, and Indore.
Officials noted that tensions escalated during the BJP's Yuva Morcha protest, resulting in both BJP and Congress workers throwing stones at each other. Additionally, objects such as water bottles, oil bags, stones, oranges, and tomatoes were hurled, according to reports.
Footage shared on social media revealed that the clash occurred in the presence of law enforcement. To manage the situation, additional police forces and water cannons were deployed.
The videos also depicted injuries sustained by a Sub-Inspector and a media cameraman, both of whom required medical attention.
In the aftermath of the clash, accusations of stone pelting were exchanged between the BJP and Congress.
“Congress workers initiated stone pelting during a peaceful protest by the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha at Rajwada, opposing the Bharat Mandapam incident,” stated Ashish Agarwal, the BJP's media in-charge for Madhya Pradesh. He asserted that BJP officials and female workers suffered injuries due to the violence.
“The debris of stones and bricks scattered outside the Congress office indicates that the Congress party was prepared to provoke violence. The stone pelting was commenced by the Congress, revealing its chaotic and intolerant attitude,” he alleged.
Conversely, Jitu Patwari, the Congress state president from Indore, leveled allegations against the BJP, claiming that BJP members openly threw stones near the Congress office, severely injuring Indore District President Vipin Wankhede and several Congress associates. Many civilians and journalists were also harmed.
The Indore police reported that law and order has been restored, and further actions will be taken pending investigation. In the meantime, security measures outside Congress offices in Bhopal and Indore have been intensified.
