Kolkata, May 3 (NationPress) Trinamool Congress General Secretary and Lok Sabha member Abhishek Banerjee criticized the BJP administration in Goa in light of the tragic stampede at the Shree Devi Lairai temple, remarking that stampedes seem to occur frequently in BJP-governed regions.
“I am profoundly saddened by the unfortunate loss of six lives at the Sree Devi Lairai Temple in Goa. I extend my deepest condolences to the families who are mourning and my prayers for the swift recovery of the injured. Such incidents have unfortunately become a pattern in BJP-ruled states,” Banerjee stated in a post on ‘X’.
He further criticized the BJP for its claims regarding double-engine governance at both the Centre and state levels.
“From Hathras to Goa, the repetition of such tragedies in Double Engine states signifies a troubling trend of administrative negligence,” Banerjee expressed.
He called on the Goa government to initiate a thorough investigation and ensure accountability for this preventable tragedy.
“Public safety should never be compromised due to systemic failures,” he added.
Six individuals lost their lives and over 30 were injured following a stampede during the Lairai Devi temple event in Shirgaon village, Goa. This incident took place early Saturday morning.
Initial reports indicate that overcrowding and insufficient arrangements may have contributed to the disaster.
Witnesses reported that chaos ensued when a section of the crowd became uncontrollable. Locals and temple volunteers acted quickly to assist those in danger.
The stampede occurred as thousands of devotees gathered to participate in the centuries-old temple ritual, which includes barefoot 'dhonds' walking over a bed of burning embers.
The situation intensified at a spot along the route where the crowd suddenly surged downhill.
The Shri Lairai Yatra, held annually in North Goa, draws over 50,000 devotees.
