BJP Bengal chief: Govt formation ready, oath ceremony tomorrow at 10 am
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
BJP West Bengal President Samik Bhattacharya on Friday, 8 May declared that all preparations for the formation of a new government in West Bengal are in place, calling the occasion a 'festival' for the people of the state. The oath-taking ceremony is scheduled for Saturday at 10 am, with top national leadership expected to attend.
Key Developments
Speaking to news agency IANS, Bhattacharya said, "The preparations for forming the government have already been completed. The oath-taking ceremony will take place tomorrow at 10 A.M. The Prime Minister, Defence Minister, Home Minister, and several Chief Ministers will attend the swearing-in ceremony. The entire BJP leadership will be present, and the government will be formed."
He described the occasion in symbolic terms, invoking the legacy of Syama Prasad Mookerjee, the founding president of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh and a towering figure in Bengal's political history. "Tomorrow is a festival in West Bengal. The government is being formed on the land of Syama Prasad Mookerjee, who sacrificed his life for the unity and integrity of the country," Bhattacharya said.
BJP Workers' Sacrifices Acknowledged
Bhattacharya also framed the government formation as a tribute to the party's grassroots workers, stating, "This government is the government of 312 BJP workers who sacrificed their lives over the last 15 years." The remark underscores the long and often violent political journey the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has endured in West Bengal, where it has historically been locked in fierce competition with the ruling All India Trinamool Congress (TMC).
Governor's Assembly Dissolution Order
When asked about Governor R.N. Ravi's order dissolving the West Bengal Legislative Assembly, Bhattacharya distanced the BJP from the constitutional move. "That is a constitutional provision. It is a matter between Mamata and the Governor. We have no role or interference in it," he said. The remark signals the party's intent to keep its focus on the transition of power rather than the procedural controversy surrounding the dissolution.
Killing of BJP Leader's Aide Casts Shadow
The celebratory mood, however, is tempered by a violent incident that unfolded late Wednesday night. Chandranath Rath, Personal Assistant to senior BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari, was shot dead while returning home from a party programme in the Madhyamgram area of North 24 Parganas district. According to reports, Rath suffered multiple bullet injuries to his head, chest, and abdomen and was rushed to Viva City Hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival.
Adhikari on Thursday described the killing as 'heart-wrenching' and alleged it was a 'pre-planned murder' carried out after days of surveillance. Bhattacharya said police were investigating the matter and closely monitoring the situation. This comes amid a broader pattern of political violence in West Bengal that has drawn national attention ahead of government transitions in the state.
With the swearing-in set for Saturday morning and the BJP's top brass converging on Kolkata, all eyes will be on whether the new government can navigate both its political mandate and the law-and-order concerns already surfacing on its doorstep.
