Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders and workers on Thursday, 30 July staged a demonstration outside the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) headquarters in New Delhi, demanding the resignation of Punjab Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains over a series of alleged exam paper leaks in the state. The protest comes days after Punjab Police reportedly busted an inter-state cheating racket during the 19 July pharmacy officer recruitment examination.

What Triggered the Protest

The Punjab government, led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, came under renewed pressure after the pharmacy officer exam cheating bust, which the BJP cited as the latest in a pattern of alleged examination malpractice under the AAP administration. Party workers gathered outside the AAP office to press their demand for ministerial accountability, drawing a pointed contrast with the recent resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan amid the NEET paper leak controversy at the national level.

What BJP Leaders Said

BJP MP Yogender Chandolia accused the Arvind Kejriwal-led AAP of 'having a hand in creating the ruckus' during a separate agitation at Jantar Mantar in the capital. He alleged that the Punjab government had failed to act despite repeated paper leak incidents in the state. 'It cannot go on like this,' he said.

BJP worker Irfan Salmani, who participated in the protest, drew a direct parallel: 'We have gathered here to demand the resignation of the Punjab Education Minister as few goons of Arvind Kejriwal were sitting at Jantar Mantar and indulged in stone pelting while demanding the resignation of Dharmendra Pradhan which he tendered. But will Kejriwal now ask the Punjab Education Minister to resign as well since repeated paper leak cases are being reported?'

Salmani added: 'We don't want to create a Jantar Mantar kind of a situation, we are decent workers of the BJP and are, therefore, demanding his resignation through a decent demonstration.'

The NEET Comparison

A female BJP worker invoked the Centre's handling of the NEET paper leak to highlight what she described as a double standard. 'On our part, as soon as the NEET paper leak came into light, an FIR was registered, accused were arrested and they are still in jail. The government even conducted a successful re-examination within one month. But they should look within themselves; multiple paper leaks have been reported under Harjot Singh's tenure, so why are they not taking accountability?' she said.

A senior party worker echoed this, referencing Pradhan's departure: 'When the country's Education Minister can resign on moral grounds, and Kejriwal had himself said that such resignations should happen to check accountability, then despite the AAP being in power in Punjab, why is he not seeking the resignation of the Education Minister there?' He characterised the AAP's stance as 'double standards.'

The protest reflects a wider political battle between the BJP and AAP over governance credibility in Punjab, a state the AAP swept in 2022 on an anti-corruption and education reform platform. Critics argue that repeated examination irregularities undercut the party's core governance narrative.
