Bhopal/Shivpuri, April 23: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislator Preetam Singh Lodhi, representing the Pichhore constituency in Madhya Pradesh, issued a public apology on Thursday, April 23, after a video of him verbally abusing a senior police officer went viral and triggered a political storm across the state. Lodhi met Chief Minister Mohan Yadav and BJP state president Hemant Khandelwal at the Chief Minister's official residence in Bhopal before making the apology statement.

MLA's Apology and Explanation

Lodhi stated that he was deeply hurt when police publicly paraded his son and that the emotional distress drove him to use inappropriate language against police officials. He expressed sincere regret over his conduct and assured that he would be more careful with his choice of words going forward.

He further pledged to strictly adhere to BJP's party guidelines and said he has submitted a formal written reply to both Chief Minister Mohan Yadav and BJP state chief Hemant Khandelwal. In his letter, Lodhi requested a thorough and impartial inquiry into the entire incident, including the circumstances surrounding his son's arrest.

The Viral Video and What Triggered the Row

The controversy erupted after a video clip of Lodhi went viral on social media, showing him directly confronting Karera Sub-Divisional Officer of Police (SDOP) Ayush Jakhar. In the clip, the MLA was heard telling the officer that Karera is not his "daddy's fiefdom" and threatening to mobilise a large crowd to march to the officer's residence.

He also made remarks implying that his son would contest elections from the area and challenged the officer to stop him if he had the courage — remarks widely condemned as an intimidation of a public servant on duty.

The root cause of the confrontation was a road accident on April 16 involving Lodhi's son, Dinesh Lodhi. Dinesh allegedly drove a Thar SUV into a group of people, injuring two women and three men who were travelling on a motorcycle. Police registered a First Information Report (FIR) and seized the vehicle. The MLA's outburst is believed to have been triggered by his son's subsequent public parading by police.

Show-Cause Notice and Party Pressure

A day before the apology, on Wednesday, April 22, BJP state president Hemant Khandelwal issued a formal show-cause notice to Lodhi. The notice categorised his conduct as "highly objectionable" and a violation of party discipline, demanding a written explanation within three days.

The party's swift action signals that the BJP leadership in Madhya Pradesh is acutely aware of the political damage the episode could inflict, especially as it touches upon the sensitive issue of elected representatives intimidating law enforcement personnel.

IPS Association, Opposition, and Protest Groups React

The fallout extended well beyond party corridors. The Indian Police Service (IPS) Association wrote a formal letter to Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, demanding strict action against the MLA and describing his remarks as a direct insult to the administrative and law enforcement system of the state.

Leader of Opposition Umang Singhar accused the BJP of shielding wrongdoers within its ranks, calling the episode symptomatic of a culture of impunity among ruling party legislators. His remarks were echoed by other opposition voices who demanded accountability.
