Kolkata, March 20 (NationPress) A commotion erupted in the West Bengal Assembly on Thursday, marking the final day of the second phase of the budget session, as the BJP MLAs protested, walked out, and subsequently set ablaze an effigy of Speaker Biman Bandopadhyay on the lawn.
The protests were triggered by an attack on a rally led by Suvendu Adhikari, the Leader of Opposition (LoP), on Wednesday in Baruipur, located in the South 24 Parganas district. Notably, Speaker Bandopadhyay is the MLA representing the Baruipur Paschim constituency.
During the protest on the Assembly lawn, the BJP MLAs vocally demanded the immediate resignation of Bandopadhyay from his role as Speaker.
As the House commenced its proceedings on Thursday afternoon, the BJP legislators initiated protests regarding the attack on the Adhikari-led rally, allegedly orchestrated by local Trinamool Congress activists.
Initially, the BJP MLAs gathered in the well of the House, raising slogans to denounce the attack. After approximately thirty minutes of protesting within the House, they walked out and continued their demonstration on the Assembly lawn.
Subsequently, they burned the effigy of the Speaker as a significant act of protest.
The chief whip of the BJP legislative party in the Assembly, Shankar Ghosh, stated that Wednesday's attack highlighted the treatment of the LoP and cast doubt on the impartiality of the Speaker. He remarked, “It is regrettable that the rally, as well as the vehicle of the Leader of Opposition, were attacked within the constituency of the Speaker. Our protests regarding this matter will persist,” Ghosh asserted.
He further emphasized that the severity of the attack on Adhikari's convoy was significant enough to pose a potential threat to his life. “If the Leader of Opposition faced such an assault, it is evident that the safety of ordinary citizens in the state is at risk,” Ghosh remarked.
In the meantime, Adhikari has filed an FIR with the Baruipur district police concerning the attack on his convoy and rally from Wednesday. The police have initiated an investigation and are reviewing the CCTV footage from the route of the rally.
