New Delhi, Jan 16 (NationPress) Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP from New Delhi, Bansuri Swaraj, on Friday, accused the former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and his Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Punjab of systematically undermining democracy and the media by misusing government machinery.

Highlighting the actions taken against the Punjab Kesari newspaper and its personnel, Swaraj criticized the AAP government in Punjab for its inability to tolerate constructive criticism.

Speaking to reporters, she stated, "The AAP government in Punjab has responded to criticism and inquiries by attacking the fourth pillar of democracy."

"The BJP vehemently condemns and denounces this action by the Punjab government in the strongest terms," she exclaimed.

"With the current effort to suppress the media and undermine democracy in Punjab, the countdown for the AAP has commenced," she warned.

"It seems Kejriwal has overlooked the fact that the citizens of Delhi have turned against AAP's misgovernance. The oppressive tactics being employed in Punjab to silence the media and stifle democracy through an authoritarian approach are indicative of AAP's impending downfall, especially with the upcoming Assembly elections in this agrarian state," Swaraj remarked.

She elaborated on how the Punjab Police, at Kejriwal's direction, raided the reputable Punjab Kesari newspaper without prior notice, injuring employees and forcibly entering the office, which she described as a blatant assault on democracy.

Swaraj pointed out that media repression has long been a tendency of the AAP, which began shortly after they took power in Delhi in 2015.

"During the COVID-19 crisis at the Delhi Secretariat, seven journalists from an English daily were ousted from the WhatsApp group that provided oxygen-related information because they published a critical article about the then AAP government," she added.

Furthermore, in August 2023, the AAP government in Delhi prohibited a TV network’s journalists from accessing the Delhi Secretariat.

"It appears that Kejriwal has forgotten that the Delhi Secretariat is owned by the people of Delhi, not his personal domain. When allegations surfaced regarding Kejriwal's misuse of public funds for personal luxury, a female journalist who reported the issue was arrested by the Punjab Police in Ludhiana," Swaraj stated.

The BJP MP mentioned that in 2022, the Punjab and Haryana High Court took suo motu notice and dismissed the FIR.

"These instances highlight the struggles of large media outlets, but the reality remains that the AAP government refuses to accept any form of dissent or criticism," she asserted.

Swaraj accused Kejriwal's power-induced decision-making as a factor that has led AAP to target the media.

She indicated that Kejriwal has misused the Punjab Police to arrest his former AAP colleague Kumar Vishwas in Delhi.

In a similar vein, the Punjab Police was used to detain BJP leader Tajinder Bagga, she concluded.
