New Delhi, March 21 (NationPress) Parliament member Praveen Khandelwal sharply criticized Leader of the Opposition (LoP) Rahul Gandhi’s advocacy for a nationwide caste census, labeling it as a “desperate move to salvage his political career”.

The BJP representative from Delhi’s Chandni Chowk, in a conversation with IANS, took aim at both the Congress party and Rahul Gandhi for their renewed calls for a caste census, despite having sidelined the issue during their long tenure in power.

“This is merely a political stunt by the Congress party and Rahul Gandhi. The Congress has held power for many years but never took action on this matter, instead hindering any initiatives. Now, Rahul is advocating for a caste census as a desperate strategy to maintain political relevance,” Praveen Khandelwal remarked.

He added that due to consecutive electoral failures, the Congress finds itself marginalized, and by advocating for a caste census, it aims to rally public backing and gain an advantage.

Khandelwal's fierce remarks arise after LoP Gandhi's assertion that Babasaheb Ambedkar’s dream has remained “unfulfilled” and his party is dedicated to achieving it.

In the Lok Sabha on Thursday, Gandhi reiterated the necessity of a caste census, deeming it a vital measure to expose the “truth of inequality”. On social media, he stated that Babasaheb Ambedkar’s vision is “still incomplete” and shared a video of his discussion with former UGC Chairman Sukhadeo Thorat.

“The struggle for equity that started 98 years ago continues. On March 20, 1927, Babasaheb Ambedkar directly confronted caste discrimination through the Mahad Satyagraha. We talked about the significance of this Satyagraha with Prof. Thorat, a distinguished educationist and economist, who is also part of the study committee on the caste survey in Telangana,” Rahul Gandhi shared on X along with the video.

Rahul Gandhi further expressed, “Babasaheb's dream remains incomplete. His fight transcends the past; it is also a challenge for today - we will confront it with all our strength.”

Significantly, the Congress government in Telangana recently passed two Bills in the state Assembly, granting 42% reservations for OBCs in education, employment, and local governance.
