Bengaluru, May 1 (NationPress) The Congress administration in Karnataka has asserted that the Central Government's decision to initiate a caste census is a direct response to the ongoing demands articulated by the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi. The ruling party has also committed to providing its full support to this initiative.
During a media interaction near his residence in Bengaluru on Thursday, Deputy Chief Minister and Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee President D.K. Shivakumar stated that the Centre's action was influenced by Rahul Gandhi's persistent calls for a caste census.
“As the Leader of the Opposition, Rahul Gandhi has consistently asserted that it is the Union Government's duty to conduct a caste census. The Centre has finally responded to his demand and taken a step forward in this regard,” Shivakumar commented.
In response to inquiries about the Centre's decision, he further noted, “Rahul Gandhi has also emphasized the necessity of completing the caste census within a designated timeframe. To ensure justice for all communities, the allocation of resources and benefits must be predicated on precise population data. This has long been a fundamental ideological stance of the Congress party. Our Chief Minister concurs with this perspective, and the Karnataka government will provide unwavering support.”
The Karnataka government has also called upon the Centre to incorporate a thorough social, economic, and educational assessment alongside the caste census.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, in a statement issued on Wednesday following the Union Cabinet's decision, remarked, “Our government wholeheartedly embraces the Centre’s initiative to conduct a caste census in conjunction with the population census. Concurrently, I urge the Central Government to carry out a social, economic, and educational survey alongside it.”
“In Karnataka, we not only conducted a caste census but also evaluated the social, economic, and educational conditions of various communities. Based on this information, we have sought to revise the current reservation policy and expand its scope. I hope the Centre will undertake similar actions to successfully complete this process,” he added.
