Kolkata, Oct 6 (NationPress) BJP Maldaha Uttar MP Khagen Murmu and MLA Shankar Ghosh faced a violent assault by miscreants on Monday while heading to support individuals impacted by the landslides in North Bengal and to distribute essential relief materials.
While Ghosh suffered minor injuries, the two-time BJP MP endured severe wounds to his head and face.
The assault occurred in Nagrakata, located in the Jalpaiguri district of North Bengal. The BJP MP was seen bleeding profusely, with a significant injury on the left side of his face.
He was promptly transported to a primary health center for medical attention. The assailants also hurled stones at their vehicles and continued their attack using slippers, sticks, and bricks until secured by their bodyguards.
In a video shared from the attacked convoy, BJP MLA Shankar Ghosh stated, "This is how we were assaulted. Not a single window of our vehicle remains intact. People threw stones and bricks at us. Our MP is gravely injured. Total chaos is prevailing in West Bengal."
After the attack on the BJP MP, the Leader of the Opposition in the state Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, condemned the Mamata Banerjee government and Trinamool Congress for allegedly orchestrating the assault.
He shared on his X account, "Mamata Banerjee is in full panic mode. She has belatedly recognized that the people of West Bengal have rejected her inhumane act of 'Dancing at Carnival with Celebrities' while North Bengal suffered from floods and landslides, resulting in numerous fatalities and thousands left homeless."
"In contrast, @BJP4Bengal MLAs and MPs have been on the ground assisting those affected. She has now pressed the panic button and unleashed her goons from the 'Special Community' to attack BJP MPs and MLAs to hinder their relief efforts," he added.
The BJP leader further mentioned, "MP Shri Khagen Murmu was brutally assaulted and left with bloody injuries in Nagrakata today while accompanying @BJP4Bengal President Shri Samik Bhattacharya to the flood-affected regions. MLA Dr Shankar Ghosh's vehicle also came under attack in the presence of police. Mamata Banerjee, your intimidation tactics will not deter BJP."
Following days of relentless rainfall that resulted in catastrophic landslides claiming at least 23 lives as reported until Monday morning, the weather in the hills cleared today. Rescue operations accelerated as many stranded tourists also descended from the hills.
Union Minister of State for Education and DoNER, Sukanta Majumdar, also criticized the Mamata Banerjee government for failing to protect an elected MP.
"Failed Chief Minister Smt. Mamata Banerjee, who, even after receiving news yesterday of the catastrophic destruction in North Bengal and the tragic loss of many lives, was seen celebrating on the Carnival stage at Red Road, has clearly demonstrated how fearful she has become of BJP West Bengal workers and leaders, who have been tirelessly conducting rescue and relief operations since yesterday," he stated on his X account.
"Today in Nagrakata, while BJP MP Shri @khagen_murmu and @ShankarGhoshBJP, MLA and chief opposition whip in the West Bengal Assembly, were evaluating flood-affected areas and distributing aid, they were violently attacked in the presence of Mamata's police. Chief Minister @MamataOfficial, the people of Bengal will not forget this cowardice and shamelessness. From yesterday until today, the residents of Bengal will hold you accountable for every immoral and inhumane act of brutality. Shame!" Majumdar added.
