Kolkata, April 8 (NationPress) The BJP's West Bengal chapter approached a single judge bench of the Calcutta High Court on Tuesday, requesting authorization to hold a rally in Kolkata on April 12 in celebration of Hanuman Jayanti.
In their petition submitted to Justice Tirthankar Ghosh, they asserted that despite previously seeking permission from Kolkata Police for the rally, no response has been received.
The rally is proposed to take place on April 12 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Red Road in central Kolkata.
The court has accepted the petition, and a hearing is expected to occur on Wednesday.
Recently, some organizers had to seek the Calcutta High Court's approval for processions during Ram Navami on April 6.
Two Ram Navami processions in Kolkata and the adjacent Howrah district were held on April 6 after receiving the High Court's consent. The BJP's state unit claimed that the police consistently deny or remain unresponsive to requests for processions related to Hindu festivals.
A member of the BJP's state committee stated, “Whether it’s a Hindu festival or a public political event by opposition parties, the only option left is to appeal to the Calcutta High Court after police deny the request every time.”
On April 6, extensive security was implemented across various areas in West Bengal due to the Ram Navami processions. BJP leaders, including former national vice-president Dilip Ghosh and the Leader of Opposition in the state Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, criticized the heightened police presence.
They accused the state government of inciting unnecessary panic among the public by enforcing stringent security measures and restrictions specifically for Hindu festival events.
