Bengaluru, April 21 (NationPress) A delegation from the Karnataka BJP visited Legislative Assembly Speaker U.T. Khader at his office in Vidhana Soudha, Bengaluru, on Monday to hand over a memorandum advocating for the revocation of the suspension of 18 BJP MLAs.
On March 21, a significant event unfolded when 18 BJP MLAs were suspended for a period of six months from the Karnataka Legislative Assembly effective immediately, due to accusations of showing disrespect to the Speaker’s Chair and for throwing torn copies of a Bill at him.
This suspension followed a disruption of Assembly proceedings, where the BJP MLAs staged a protest in the Well of the House, calling for a judicial or CBI inquiry into the alleged honey trap situation involving Minister for Cooperation, K.N. Rajanna.
Marshals had to remove all 18 MLAs after persistent disruptions and multiple adjournments of the House.
After the memorandum was submitted, the Leader of the Opposition (LoP), R. Ashoka, informed reporters, “We approached the Speaker and presented our request. The events within the Legislative Assembly should have remained confined to the House. The establishment of committees and the six-month suspension of BJP MLAs is not justifiable.”
He emphasized that this was not an isolated incident. “Numerous similar occurrences have transpired previously. It’s not that the BJP aimed to insult the Speaker’s Chair. Our protest was a collective party action regarding the CD issue. We clarified that our protest was a party position and there was no intention to oppose the Speaker,” Ashoka stated.
LoP Ashoka further noted that the Speaker responded with respect, indicating he would review the situation and provide his insights after consulting the Law Minister.
The Speaker also expressed his desire for the Assembly session to progress without issues and mentioned he would discuss with the government prior to making a final determination. “His reply was encouraging,” Ashoka remarked.
In light of the murder of former Karnataka DGP Om Prakash, LoP Ashoka commented, “Karnataka has seen incidents of murder and rape. The law and order situation has deteriorated. Now, even police officers are not safe. Regardless of the motives behind the murder, the incident has gained national attention.”
He urged the government to take necessary measures. “The government should refrain from issuing reckless statements. There is no longer any fear of the police or repercussions for criminal acts in Karnataka. Criminals behave as if they can operate without consequences. This mindset is contributing to such events,” he asserted.
Ashoka stressed the importance of an effective police force. “The public is at a loss as to who is managing the police department. This event raises concerns about whether the government is even functioning,” he claimed.
Former DGP Om Prakash was found brutally murdered at his home on Sunday. The police have filed an FIR against his wife and daughter and are currently investigating the matter.
