Bengaluru, May 22 (NationPress) Union Minister for Labour, Employment and Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Shobha Karandlaje has addressed a letter to U. T. Khader, the Speaker of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly, concerning the suspension of 18 MLAs.

She expresses that this action poses significant questions regarding the democratic integrity of the Speaker and the Congress-led administration in Karnataka.

"I am reaching out to convey my profound concern and disappointment regarding the suspension of 18 Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) from the Bharatiya Janata Party for a duration of six months, following the incidents of March 21, 2025," stated Union Minister Shobha.

"While I completely acknowledge the authority and decorum of the House, I must assert that the suspension of these elected officials for such an extended period is not just excessive, but it also raises serious concerns about democratic operations," she highlighted.

The intense debate that transpired within the House, regarding the alleged honey-trapping scandal and the 4 percent reservation for Muslims in government contracts, was a legitimate display of dissent and concern, both fundamental to the ethos of a thriving democracy, she remarked.

In a parliamentary democracy, protest should not be viewed as disruption; it is a mode of participation. The Assembly floor serves as the most fitting platform for voicing public interest issues, she emphasized.

As the Speaker, adopting a balanced approach of guidance and decorum could have mitigated such drastic punitive measures, she noted.

Furthermore, the suspension of these 18 MLAs also denies millions of citizens their rightful representation in the Assembly, as stated by Shobha Karandlaje.

Restricting these MLAs from attending committee meetings and fulfilling other legislative duties effectively silences the voices of their constituents, which contradicts the principles of representative democracy, she asserted.

"Hence, I urge you to reconsider this decision and take appropriate steps to lift the suspension. Such a corrective action would not only preserve the dignity of the Assembly but also restore trust in our democratic structures," emphasized the Union Minister.

"I hope you will address this matter with the seriousness it warrants and take necessary actions in the interest of fairness and parliamentary integrity," she urged.

The BJP delegation also presented a memorandum to Speaker U.T. Khader.

Point of View

It’s crucial to recognize the implications of the Karnataka Speaker's actions on the democratic framework.
