Delhi Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) President Harsh Malhotra on Tuesday, 4 August accused Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Convenor Arvind Kejriwal of exploiting the E20 ethanol-blended petrol issue purely to stay in the news cycle, calling his protest march a staged performance with no factual grounding. Malhotra's remarks came as Kejriwal claimed he had been stopped by police while attempting to march to the Prime Minister's residence in New Delhi.

Malhotra's Charge Against Kejriwal

Malhotra said he had anticipated Kejriwal's move a day in advance. 'Just as I had predicted yesterday, Arvind Kejriwal today claimed that he had been stopped by the police and staged a half-hour protest outside his office. He then handed over five to seven bundles of papers to the police and claimed that he had submitted 2,33,238 petitions,' Malhotra said.

The Delhi BJP chief argued that Kejriwal is fully aware that ethanol-blended petrol represents the direction of national energy policy, yet chose to oppose it for political optics. He challenged Kejriwal to produce verifiable evidence of vehicle damage caused by E20 fuel. 'Despite repeated challenges, Kejriwal has still been unable to produce even 100 vehicles accompanied by a certified automobile engineer's report confirming that E20 petrol caused damage to them,' Malhotra added.

Punjab 2027 Angle

Malhotra framed Kejriwal's anti-E20 campaign as a calculated political manoeuvre ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections, where the AAP is the ruling party. 'Keeping in mind AAP's certain defeat in the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections, Kejriwal is attempting to revive his political future through social media-driven politics, and his campaign against ethanol-blended petrol is simply the first step in that direction,' he said. Malhotra warned that continued politicisation of the fuel issue risked further eroding whatever political relevance Kejriwal retains.

BJP MP Sudhanshu Trivedi Joins the Criticism

BJP MP Sudhanshu Trivedi also weighed in, speaking to reporters outside Parliament. He described Kejriwal as carrying 'the burden of his failed political ambitions' and accused him of making 'baseless and unfounded allegations' without factual evidence. Trivedi specifically referenced Kejriwal's engineering credentials, questioning why someone with an IIT mechanical engineering background would not offer a technical assessment of E20's impact. 'He claims to be an IIT graduate, but he often speaks without presenting facts. Earlier, during discussions on vaccines, he had suggested that vaccine formulas should be circulated to everyone,' Trivedi said, arguing that the pattern pointed to deliberate obfuscation rather than genuine concern.

The E20 Debate in Context

The E20 fuel policy — which mandates blending 20% ethanol with petrol — is a central plank of the Centre's energy transition and farm income strategy, with rollout underway across Indian cities. Critics, including some automobile associations, have raised concerns about compatibility with older vehicle engines, though the government maintains that modern vehicles are certified for E20 use. Kejriwal's campaign has sought to amplify those concerns, positioning AAP as a defender of the common vehicle owner. BJP leaders argue the opposition lacks technical evidence to back those claims.

With AAP facing electoral headwinds in both Delhi and Punjab, the E20 issue is shaping up as an early flashpoint in what is expected to be a prolonged pre-election political season.
