BJP's Gaurav Bhatia dismisses Oppn democracy claims, flags SC-ordered Punjab repolling
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) national spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia on Thursday, 8 October rejected the Opposition's repeated charge that democracy is under threat in India, calling the allegations baseless and driven by an 'anarchist strategy.' Speaking at the BJP headquarters in New Delhi, Bhatia described the current political climate as a 'battle between two ideologies' and accused Opposition parties of deliberately fabricating a narrative of constitutional breakdown without evidence.
BJP's Rebuttal of Opposition Claims
Bhatia argued that the Opposition's allegations about democratic institutions being weakened had 'no iota of evidence' behind them. He invoked Prime Minister Narendra Modi's record, stating that Modi had 'always respected the Constitution and worked for the welfare of people' both as a Chief Minister and as Prime Minister over 25 years in public life. 'Baseless allegations are being levelled by irresponsible, anarchist Opposition. Their claims of destroying the Constitution have no base,' he said.
He also questioned why no Opposition leader had offered any factual grounding for the charge that democracy was being 'murdered,' framing it as a political tactic rather than a substantive concern.
BJP Turns Tables: Supreme Court and Punjab Municipal Polls
Turning the argument on its head, Bhatia directed sharp criticism at the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Punjab, citing the Supreme Court's intervention in the state's recent municipal election process. He said the apex court ordered repolling in 50 wards — spread across Patiala and Moga districts — after finding widespread violations, including the intimidation of candidates and forcible prevention of their filing nomination forms.
'Candidates were not allowed to fill nomination forms. The forms were torn down, and the candidates were detained, beaten and intimidated by the goons of the ruling party,' he alleged. The elections in those 50 wards were subsequently declared invalid, he said, on the direct intervention of the Supreme Court.
Silence of INDIA Bloc Leaders Targeted
Bhatia noted that despite the Supreme Court's scathing observations on the Punjab civic poll violations, Opposition leaders — including Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, AAP founder Arvind Kejriwal, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, and All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief Mamata Banerjee — had remained 'tight-lipped' on the issue.
He said the AAP, which rose to prominence on a 'swaraj' (self-governance) platform, had in practice delivered 'goonda raj' (rule by thugs) in Punjab. 'This is the real murder of democracy,' he remarked, drawing a pointed contrast with the Opposition's national-level claims.
Context and What It Means
This comes amid a sustained political exchange between the ruling BJP and the INDIA bloc, which has repeatedly raised concerns about the health of democratic institutions. The BJP's counter-offensive, centred on the Punjab civic poll controversy, aims to shift the burden of proof onto the Opposition. Notably, the Supreme Court's repolling order lends institutional weight to the BJP's Punjab-specific argument — though critics may argue that isolated state-level incidents do not directly rebut the broader systemic concerns raised by the Opposition. The Punjab municipal elections and their judicial fallout are expected to remain a flashpoint in the lead-up to state electoral cycles.
