BJP's Rathindra Bose elected unopposed as West Bengal Assembly Speaker
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Rathindra Bose, a first-time Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislator from the Cooch Behar (Dakshin) constituency, was elected unopposed as the new Speaker of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly on Friday, 15 May. Bose's election marks a significant shift in the House's leadership after years of All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) dominance in the state.
How the Election Unfolded
Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced Bose's name as the BJP's nominee for Speaker on Thursday. With no other political party putting forward a rival candidate, Bose was formally elected unopposed the following day. In keeping with parliamentary convention, he took the Speaker's chair flanked by CM Adhikari on one side and Sovandeb Chattopadhyay, the Leader of Opposition, on the other.
Notably, outgoing Speaker Biman Bandopadhyay — who served during the previous TMC-led government and has been re-elected to the Assembly this term — was present to congratulate his successor, reflecting a moment of cross-party decorum.
What the Chief Minister Said
Adhikari, as Leader of the House, was given the first opportunity to address the floor. He announced that all Assembly proceedings would henceforth be telecast live — a move aimed at greater transparency. 'I wish that for the next five years, this Assembly will be able to work constructively to fulfil the expectations of the people of the state. I assure that the opposition will get an opportunity to present its views properly on the floor of the House. At the same time, I also hope that the opposition MLAs will refrain from trying to disrupt the proceedings of the Assembly from the very beginning,' Adhikari said.
Who Is Rathindra Bose
A Chartered Accountant by profession, Bose brings a non-legal background to the Speaker's chair — the first time in a long while that the West Bengal Assembly has a Speaker from outside the legal profession. He has been associated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) for an extended period before transitioning into active electoral politics with the BJP.
In the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, Bose defeated TMC candidate Abhijit De Bhowmik from Cooch Behar South by a margin of more than 23,000 votes. He is also the first legislator from any constituency in North Bengal to be elected Speaker of the state House.
Significance and What Comes Next
Bose's elevation is emblematic of the BJP's broader consolidation of power in West Bengal following its 2026 election victory. The live telecast of Assembly proceedings, announced by the Chief Minister on the same day, could set a new benchmark for legislative transparency in the state. All eyes will now be on how the new Speaker navigates a House that still includes a significant opposition presence, and whether the Assembly's working norms hold through what is expected to be a politically charged term.
