BJP wins West Bengal 2026: Modi hails 'good governance' mandate
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday, 4 May 2026, hailed the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)'s commanding performance in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly Elections, calling it a decisive victory of good governance over what he described as the regressive rule of the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC). Counting began at 8 am on Monday, with early trends placing the BJP in a strong lead position.
Modi's Message to Bengal
"The Lotus blooms in West Bengal! The 2026 West Bengal Assembly Elections will be remembered forever," Prime Minister Modi wrote on social media platform X, framing the result as a historic turning point for the state. He described the mandate as a "display of people's power" and pledged that the BJP would fulfil the dreams and aspirations of every person in West Bengal.
"I bow to each and every person of West Bengal. The people have given a spectacular mandate to BJP and I assure them that our Party will do everything possible to fulfil the dreams and aspirations of the people of West Bengal. We will provide a Government that ensures opportunity and dignity to all sections of society," Modi added in a follow-up post on X.
The Prime Minister was also set to visit the BJP headquarters in New Delhi shortly after his social media posts, to address thousands of party workers (karyakartas) at the victory celebrations.
Modi Salutes BJP Workers
Modi paid tribute to the BJP's grassroots cadre, acknowledging years of ground-level work under what he described as adverse conditions. "For years, they have worked hard on the ground, overcome all sorts of adversities and spoken about our development agenda. They are the strength of our Party. I salute them," he wrote on X.
The acknowledgement comes amid long-standing reports of political violence in West Bengal, which BJP leaders have frequently cited as a source of hardship for their party workers in the state.
Amit Shah's 'Sonar Bangla' Pledge
Union Home Minister Amit Shah welcomed the Bengal poll outcome and pledged to use the BJP's mandate to transform the state into 'Sonar Bangla' — a vision evoking the cultural and economic renaissance of Bengal's storied past.
"With the hopes and aspirations with which Bengal has expressed this trust in the leadership of PM Narendra Modi ji, we will certainly fulfill them. BJP will work day and night to restore the lost glory of Bengal, the sacred land of great personalities like Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, Swami Vivekananda, Kavi Guru Tagore, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, and Dr. Syama Prasad Mukherjee, and to realise the dream of 'Sonar Bangla'," Shah said.
Shah also paid tribute to slain BJP workers, stating: "The historic victory for the BJP in Bengal is the result of the sacrifices, struggles, and martyrdom of our countless workers. It is a triumph of the patience of those families who, even while enduring violence, never abandoned the saffron flag."
TMC and the Appeasement Charge
Home Minister Shah was pointed in his criticism of the outgoing TMC administration, asserting that the Bengal electorate had "taught a lesson to the infiltrators and their sympathizers" and that those engaging in what he termed "politics of appeasement" would not forget this verdict. The BJP has consistently accused the TMC government of vote-bank politics, a charge the TMC has denied.
What Comes Next
With counting trends pointing firmly toward a BJP majority, attention now shifts to government formation in Kolkata. The party is expected to name a Chief Minister candidate in the coming days. For the BJP, a win in West Bengal — one of the last major states outside its political reach — would represent a significant expansion of its national footprint ahead of future electoral cycles.
