Abhishek Banerjee Questions Development in Balurghat Under BJP's Double-Engine Rule
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, March 31 (NationPress) Abhishek Banerjee, the General Secretary of the Trinamool Congress, raised a critical question on Tuesday regarding whether the residents of Balurghat in West Bengal's South Dinajpur district have truly benefited from any schemes initiated by the Central government, despite the existence of a so-called 'double-engine government' in the area.
Pointing to specific data, Banerjee issued a challenge, openly addressing both the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Balurghat MP and Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar, as well as Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
It's important to highlight that the Trinamool Congress has not managed to reverse the BJP's victories in Balurghat during the 2019 and 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
With the Assembly elections approaching, the leadership of the Trinamool is intensifying its focus on the northern regions of Bengal.
During an election rally in Balurghat, Banerjee criticized the BJP, stating, "Balurghat has become the primary victim of this 'double-engine government.' No other area has experienced the adverse effects of this dual rule as severely. For over five years, the MP here has been from the BJP, and the MLA is also from the BJP. Yet, there has been no increase in Central funding. Compare the number of roads built under our state government's 'Pathashree' initiative and then challenge them to present their own accomplishments. The BJP MP has been in office for seven years without achieving anything of significance."
Banerjee further challenged the Central government, saying, "Let the BJP come and observe the accomplishments of our (Trinamool Congress) government in Balurghat compared to what Mr. Sukanta Majumdar's 'Modi government' has achieved. Just as the constituents of the neighboring Tapan Assembly have benefited from the 'Yuva Sathi' initiative, Balurghat residents deserve those same opportunities."
In response to comments made by BJP MP Sukanta Majumdar during his campaign regarding the state's 'Lakshmir Bhandar' initiative, Banerjee stated, "Majumdar has asserted that if the BJP gains power, they will purportedly enhance the financial aid offered under the Lakshmir Bhandar scheme. I challenge them to illustrate the successful implementation of this scheme in any state governed by the BJP. A program where every woman in a household receives this financial support. I declare on camera: if they can achieve that, I promise I will never seek votes on behalf of the Trinamool Congress again."
"We (Trinamool Congress) have already proven our capability. Every woman reaps the rewards of the Lakshmir Bhandar initiative. Our Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee, unveiled the Yuva Sathi scheme during the budget speech, and we delivered on that commitment. Defying skepticism, the funds reached the applicants’ accounts in just 15 days," he concluded.
