Kolkata, March 16 (NationPress) The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has unveiled its inaugural list of 144 candidates on Monday for the upcoming two-phase Assembly elections covering 294 constituencies in West Bengal next month, showcasing a diverse array of professional backgrounds.

In contrast to the 2021 Assembly elections in West Bengal, the representation from the entertainment and glamour sector is limited to only two individuals: actor-turned-politician Rudranil Ghosh from Shibpur in Howrah district, and fashion designer-turned-politician Agnimitra Paul from Asansol (Dakshin) in West Burdwan district.

Agnimitra Paul currently serves as the BJP legislator for the Asansol (Dakshin) constituency.

The academic sector sees notable representation, with 32 out of the 144 candidates being educators.

Other professions featured in the candidate list include eight social workers, six lawyers, five medical practitioners, three former journalists (including current state BJP vice-president Jagannath Chattopadhyay), three spiritual leaders, and three retired military personnel.

Additionally, the list comprises a former cricketer, who is also a sitting legislator, and Sumitra Chattopadhyay, a retired administrative officer and a fifth-generation descendant of the renowned Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay, the author of India's national song 'Vande Mataram.'

Out of the announced candidates, 41 are current BJP legislators, three are former MLAs, and two previously served as Members of Parliament.

Women make up 11 of the 144 nominees.

The list includes a youthful cohort as well; 36 candidates are below the age of 40.

Additionally, 72 candidates are in the age range of 41–55 years, 32 candidates fall between 56–70 years, and four candidates are over 70.

A standout aspect of the BJP’s initial list is the nomination of the Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, from two constituencies: his current seat, Nandigram in East Midnapore district, and Bhabanipur in south Kolkata.

Bhabanipur is presently held by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

If CM Banerjee decides to contest from Bhabanipur again, it will initiate a second direct electoral showdown between her and Adhikari following the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections.

In 2021, Adhikari secured his position from Nandigram for the second consecutive term, defeating the then Trinamool Congress candidate Mamata Banerjee.

Banerjee subsequently won the Bhabanipur seat in a by-election and continued as Chief Minister for the third consecutive term.

Point of View

Encompassing various professional backgrounds. This reflects a desire to connect with a broader electorate while maintaining a focus on experienced political figures. The inclusion of younger candidates could indicate a shift towards engaging a more youthful voter base in the state.
