Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Guwahati, March 13 (NationPress) Union Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita launched a pointed critique of the opposition on Friday, asserting that rhino poaching was widespread during the Congress administration in Assam but has been significantly reduced since the BJP took charge.
Addressing reporters, Margherita claimed that rhinos were being slain almost daily under Congress's rule. He stated, “During the Congress era, at least one rhino was killed almost every day. Rhino poaching had turned into a frequent event in Assam.”
The minister asserted that after the BJP came to power, the scenario improved drastically. “With the BJP government in place, rhino killings have ceased. Our administration has implemented stringent measures to ensure wildlife protection and bolster security in conservation areas,” Margherita mentioned.
Assam hosts the largest population of the one-horned rhinoceros in the world, primarily residing in the renowned Kaziranga National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a notable success in conservation.
Margherita indicated that under the leadership of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, the state government has made wildlife protection a priority while also promoting development throughout Assam.
He emphasized that the BJP has adopted a zero-tolerance stance against wildlife crimes, enhancing surveillance and anti-poaching initiatives in national parks and sanctuaries.
In a jab at opposition parties, Margherita criticized their attempts to unite against the BJP ahead of the forthcoming elections.
He opined that such coalitions are motivated solely by political convenience and lack a cohesive vision for development. “The opposition is attempting to form alliances just to oppose the BJP. However, they possess no agenda for development or public welfare,” he remarked.
Margherita reaffirmed that the BJP remains dedicated to development and improving the lives of Assam's residents. “We will maintain our focus on development. Our priorities include infrastructure enhancement, job creation, and the overall advancement of the state,” he stated.
The Union Minister expressed confidence that the citizens of Assam would once again rally behind the BJP, citing what he termed as noticeable improvements in governance and development in recent years.
He further noted that the government's initiatives in sectors such as connectivity, investment, and conservation have fortified Assam's growth trajectory.
Margherita underscored the BJP's commitment to safeguarding the state's rich natural heritage while pursuing sustainable economic development.
