Assam CM Confident BJP Will Dominate Barak Valley in Upcoming Assembly Elections
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Guwahati, March 22 (NationPress) Assam's Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, expressed unwavering confidence in the BJP's prospects for the Barak Valley, claiming that the party is on track for a significant victory in the upcoming Assembly elections.
During a press briefing, CM Sarma stated that the BJP is expected to secure victory in at least 10 Assembly constituencies within the Barak Valley, noting that this number might even increase to 11. “We are optimistic about winning 10 seats in Barak Valley. Given the overwhelming response we are receiving, the total may rise to 11,” he remarked.
The Barak Valley, which includes the districts of Cachar, Sribhumi, and Hailakandi, is crucial electorally, containing 13 Assembly seats. The BJP, along with its allies, performed robustly in the last elections, and the party is now aiming to further solidify its position.
Additionally, the Chief Minister convened a significant meeting with three sitting MLAs who were not granted party tickets for the forthcoming elections. Dipayan Chakraborty, Niharranjan Das, and Mihir Kanti Das met with Sarma, who aimed to reconcile differences and promote unity within the party ahead of the elections.
Sources revealed that the meeting concentrated on addressing concerns and encouraging the leaders to strive for the party's success despite not being nominated this time. Sarma reportedly assured them of future responsibilities while stressing the necessity for a coordinated effort to achieve victory.
As the elections approach, the BJP has chosen to deny tickets to several sitting MLAs as part of its strategy to mitigate anti-incumbency sentiments and introduce fresh candidates. At least 18 legislators have been omitted from the candidate roster this time, indicating a substantial reshuffle intended to enhance the party's electoral chances.
This decision has, however, sparked some dissatisfaction within certain factions of the party, prompting leadership to engage in damage control through direct communication and dialogue.
As the nomination process concludes in the coming days, the BJP is set to amplify its campaign across Assam, relying on governance, welfare initiatives, and organizational strength to maintain its power in the state.
