Mumbai, Jan 15 (NationPress) As the voting process for the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections progresses, BMC Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani exercised his voting rights this morning. He reassured the citizens that all essential measures have been implemented to facilitate a seamless and secure polling experience throughout the city.
In a statement to IANS post his voting, Gagrani emphasized that vital amenities have been established at each polling station in Mumbai.
“As you are aware, the voting has commenced today in municipal regions. The polling is proceeding smoothly at all venues in Mumbai. Necessary facilities have been provided at every polling station. A strong police presence has been ensured, and trained personnel are available to support voters,” he remarked.
He appealed to residents, encouraging them to engage actively in the democratic process.
“I urge Mumbaikars to step out and cast their votes. Voting is not only your right but also your responsibility. By voting, you can ensure that local issues are effectively addressed. Hence, it is vital for everyone to participate,” he stated to IANS.
Voting is taking place across 29 municipal corporations in Maharashtra, with approximately 3.48 crore voters eligible to determine the future of 15,931 candidates. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, recognized as India's wealthiest civic body with an annual budget exceeding Rs 74,400 crore, remains the focal point of attention. In this election, around 1,700 candidates are vying for 227 seats, marking the first elections in nearly four years.
In Mumbai, the BMC elections are occurring after a significant hiatus of nine years. To maintain law and order during this electoral process, over 25,000 police officers have been deployed throughout the city.
The Mumbai civic polls have evolved into a high-stakes political battle, with the BJP–Shiv Sena alliance contending against the reunited Thackeray brothers. After nearly two decades, Uddhav Thackeray of Shiv Sena (UBT) and Raj Thackeray of the Maharashtra Navnirmal Sena (MNS) have united to regain their political clout and consolidate Marathi votes in the metropolis.
This election also represents the first BMC polls since the 2022 split in the Shiv Sena, when Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde departed with the majority of party MLAs, forming a state government in alliance with the BJP. For 25 years, from 1997 to 2022, Shiv Sena dominated the BMC.
Vote counting is set to occur on January 16. In the lead-up to the elections, rival factions of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) have established local alliances in cities such as Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad. Meanwhile, the Congress, a once-dominant force in Maharashtra, has chosen to contest independently in Mumbai, forming a partnership with Prakash Ambedkar’s Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi and the Rashtriya Samaj Paksh.
