Tirupati, June 16 (NationPress) A bomb threat call to India's spaceport Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SHAR) located in Sriharikota, Tirupati district, Andhra Pradesh, triggered immediate action from security agencies on Monday. High-security personnel at the SDSC SHAR and local police heightened their alert status after receiving a call concerning a bomb threat to the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) facility.
The alarming phone call was reportedly directed to the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) Centre in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, around midnight, leading to a comprehensive security check around the SHAR center.
Both CISF and police teams conducted extensive searches of the premises and its surroundings, while the Indian Coast Guard initiated a concurrent search along the coast.
Checks were also performed in the SHAR employees' colony adjacent to the facility, with senior police officials overseeing the search operations.
Ultimately, after thorough investigations, the initial call was determined to be a hoax.
The SDSC SHAR serves as a key facility for ISRO, offering state-of-the-art launch base infrastructure for various national and international satellite and launch vehicle missions, including those for remote sensing, communication, navigation, and scientific research. It is recognized as one of the premier spaceports globally.
This spindle-shaped island, nestled within the backwaters of Pulicat Lake and bordered by Buckingham Canal to the West and the Bay of Bengal to the East, was selected in 1969 for establishing the nation's rocket launch station, which became operational in 1971. Sriharikota spans approximately 175 square kilometers, boasting a coastline of 50 kilometers.
Last month, mock drills were conducted at SHAR in response to the evolving India-Pakistan military conflict.
Officials stated that the drills aimed to assess the preparedness, coordination, and response times of security forces in the face of potential threats.
Various security and emergency units, including the CISF Quick Response Team, CISF Bomb Disposal Team, CISF Fire Department, and medical personnel, actively participated in the drills.
