Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Bagalkot, March 28 (NationPress) Former Chief Minister and Bharatiya Janata Party MP Basavaraj Bommai has criticized the government led by Siddaramaiah for what he described as economic mismanagement and arrogance in failing to attend a meeting called by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
During a press briefing in Bagalkot, Bommai claimed that the Siddaramaiah administration has gained a negative reputation for undermining the state's financial stability.
He pointed out that the Congress government had vowed to allocate Rs 18,000 crore yearly for the Upper Krishna Project but only designated Rs 3,000 crore in the budget, which he called an injustice to the local populace.
Bommai stated that the recent Bagalkot by-election was triggered by the passing of leader H.Y. Meti, coinciding with elections in four other states.
He remarked on the significant political shifts that have transpired since the 2023 elections, expressing that the public's expectations of the government have not been met.
Despite the challenges posed by COVID-19, Bommai asserted that his government had maintained control over the financial situation, unlike the current government, which has accrued loans totaling around Rs 4 lakh crore.
He warned that with three more budgets, the state could face an additional Rs 6-7 lakh crore in debt.
On the topic of central assistance, Bommai noted that Karnataka received more funding during the 15th Finance Commission under the National Democratic Alliance compared to the 14th Finance Commission under the United Progressive Alliance.
He highlighted that railway funding for Karnataka has surged from approximately Rs 700 crore to Rs 7,000 crore, alongside significant expansion in national highway development.
Bommai remarked that reductions in Goods and Services Tax rates have proven beneficial for the average citizen, questioning how such tax reductions could be viewed as an injustice to the state.
Critiquing the Chief Minister, Bommai claimed there have been failures in executing initiatives such as the Jal Jeevan Mission and alleged that the state has not contributed its share for several projects.
He also accused Siddaramaiah of neglecting to attend meetings led by PM Modi, instead delegating ministers to represent him.
Bommai noted that Chief Ministers from states like Tamil Nadu and Kerala, as well as opposition leaders like M.K. Stalin, attended these meetings, while Siddaramaiah has also missed NITI Aayog meetings, which he termed a dereliction of duty.
On Friday, Karnataka advocated for an increased allocation of Liquefied Petroleum Gas for commercial purposes, especially within the hospitality sector, at the Prime Minister-Chief Ministers’ meeting.
PM Modi emphasized the need for COVID-style coordination between the Centre and states to address the ongoing situation.
Karnataka Food Minister K.H. Muniyappa, representing the state at the virtual meeting in Siddaramaiah's absence, stated that the state requested the Centre to boost LPG allocations for hotels, which currently stands at 20 percent for commercial use and 20 percent for industries. He urged that hotel allocation be increased to 40 percent, which would significantly benefit the hospitality sector.
