Pune, June 15 (NationPress) A number of individuals, primarily tourists, are currently unaccounted for and feared to have drowned following the collapse of a bridge they were traversing in Maharashtra's Pune district on Sunday.
The bridge, which spans the Indrayani River at Kundamala in Pune's Maval taluka, unexpectedly gave way, causing approximately 25 to 30 tourists to plunge into the water and be swept away.
As reported by NDTV, at least six tourists have reportedly drowned, with many others still feared to be missing. So far, eight individuals have been rescued, while two women remain trapped beneath the bridge.
Footage from the incident reveals that sections of the bridge, particularly those directly above the water, have collapsed and fallen into the river, as rescue teams from various agencies work tirelessly to find and save the victims.
Increased water levels, a result of heavy rainfall in the area, have worsened the situation. Maval has been experiencing intense rainfall over the past two days, leading to the Indrayani River being in spate.
Authorities, including police, fire brigade, and NDRF teams, quickly arrived at the scene to initiate a rescue operation.
Kundmala is a renowned tourist spot that attracts a significant number of visitors during the monsoon season. The number of visitors was particularly high this Sunday, and reports suggest that the old bridge was overcrowded at the time of the incident.
