Mumbai, June 16 (NationPress) The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) leader Raj Thackeray has criticized the state government following the tragic collapse of the Kanthmala bridge over the Indrayani river in Pune district, which resulted in the deaths of four individuals and left 51 others injured.
Thackeray emphasized that if the authorities remain negligent, the public must take it upon themselves to stay alert.
In his heartfelt statement, he expressed condolences on behalf of himself and the MNS, conveying his sympathies to the families affected by the unfortunate incident that occurred on Sunday afternoon.
The MNS chief questioned the administration, stating, “If the bridge was indeed in a perilous state, why wasn’t it entirely closed? If it had become unsafe, why wasn’t it demolished and replaced with a new one?”
He strongly criticized the government’s usual response, which claimed, “Rescue operations are in full swing, and the government is steadfastly with the affected.” Thackeray remarked that this is merely a clichéd statement and demanded to know the underlying reasons for such recurring disasters.
“Why do these incidents keep happening? The government has numerous departments -- what are they doing? Can’t they inspect at-risk bridges regularly, especially before the monsoon? They should either repair them or shut them down. If the administration fails to do this, what purpose does their governance serve?” he questioned.
Thackeray also urged the public to act with caution and prudence. “Citizens should exercise caution when visiting such locations, particularly with family members. While this does not absolve the government of its responsibilities, vigilance is essential if such oversights continue,” he advised.
Highlighting the early effects of the monsoon, he noted, “Waterlogging, pothole-ridden roads, and bridge failures have already begun. The government must take action immediately to alleviate citizen suffering.”
The bridge collapse occurred around 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, with approximately 125 tourists gathered at Kundmala in Pune district for a monsoon outing. A 33-year-old iron bridge connecting nearby villages gave way, sending many into the river below.
According to the preliminary report from the Pune district administration, four fatalities occurred, 51 individuals were injured, and 55 were rescued. Of the deceased, three have been identified, while one remains unidentified. The injured individuals are receiving treatment at various medical facilities.
The government has announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh for the families of those who lost their lives.
