BRS Student Wing Protests BJP Office Following Tejasvi Surya's Controversial Comments
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Hyderabad, April 17 (NationPress) The Bharat Rashtra Samithi’s student wing, known as BRSV, organized a protest on Friday outside the BJP’s Telangana office, denouncing comments made by Tejasvi Surya regarding Telangana during a recent parliamentary session.
Protesters attempted to encircle the BJP office in Nampally, shouting slogans against the Karnataka MP.
During the demonstration, they burned a poster featuring Surya. Law enforcement intervened to detain some of the protestors.
In a debate concerning the Women’s Reservation Bill in the Lok Sabha on Thursday, Surya allegedly likened the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh to the Partition of India, a statement that has sparked outrage.
This statement has drawn fierce criticism from Congress, BRS, Left parties, and Telangana Jagruti, with leaders from these groups accusing him of disrespecting Telangana by equating its creation with that of Pakistan, and they have called for an apology.
BRSV leaders asserted that Surya disrespected the sacrifices of Telangana's martyrs and the sentiments of its people, demanding an unreserved apology from the MP.
Meanwhile, BRS leader R.S. Praveen Kumar insisted that Surya should come to Hyderabad and pay respects to the families of Telangana martyrs for 24 hours straight.
The former IPS officer responded to a clarification shared by Surya on ‘X’ platform. “This unrepentant AI-generated response is insufficient, Tejasvi Surya ji. You must come along with all your Telangana BJP MPs (who remained silent during your vitriol in Parliament) to Hyderabad and touch the sacred feet of the families of all 1,300 Telangana martyrs for a continuous 24-hour period,” Kumar demanded.
Surya, in a statement released late Thursday, contended that his words were misrepresented.
“I reject the intentional insinuation propagated by the Opposition and firmly express my enduring respect for the martyrs and demonstrators who fought for Telangana. However, my remarks should be interpreted as a reminder of how the Congress has historically betrayed the Southern states, with the betrayal during the Telangana movement being particularly evident,” wrote the MP from Bengaluru South.
Simultaneously, Telangana’s transport and backward classes welfare minister, Ponnam Prabhakar, called on Union Minister for Coal and Mines, G. Kishan Reddy, to take prompt action to erase Surya's controversial remarks from the parliamentary records.
Prabhakar noted that Surya had compared Telangana to the India-Pakistan Partition.
He claimed that Kishan Reddy admitted during a press conference in New Delhi on Friday that Surya had indeed made a mistake, and urged him to persuade the Lok Sabha Speaker to expunge Surya’s comments from the official record.
