Agartala, Dec 21 (NationPress) Due to the persistent chaos in Bangladesh, the Border Security Force (BSF) has significantly ramped up its watch along the border with the neighboring nation, as reported by officials on Saturday.
A senior BSF representative mentioned that while no extra border troops have been stationed at the frontier, the level of surveillance and vigilance has been notably enhanced following the recent outbreaks of violence in Bangladesh, particularly in Dhaka.
"The BSF has amplified its vigilance and fortified its presence along the International Border since the onset of violence in Bangladesh during June–July of the previous year, especially after the Awami League government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina fell on August 5, 2024," the official disclosed to IANS under the condition of anonymity.
He further stated that there have been no significant incidents reported on either side of the border, despite ongoing unrest and large gatherings in various Bangladeshi cities, including Dhaka.
"Nonetheless, our vigilance remains paramount, and we are entirely ready to address any situation that may arise," the official added.
The official highlighted that bilateral cooperation has been enhanced through routine meetings at the sector commander, battalion, company, and Border Outpost (BOP) levels with the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) to resolve issues and improve coordination.
Four northeastern states—Tripura (856 km), Meghalaya (443 km), Mizoram (318 km), and Assam (263 km)—share a 1,880-km-long border with Bangladesh, making the region highly susceptible to cross-border movement, migration, smuggling, and other illicit activities.
In a related context, Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha, who presided over a high-level law and order review meeting at Pragna Bhawan on Saturday, stated that the state government is vigilant regarding developments in Bangladesh, communal elements, and touts, emphasizing that law and order will not be compromised.
Previously, Saha, who also oversees the Home portfolio, indicated that there is currently no significant infiltration into Tripura from Bangladesh, although some exfiltration instances from the Indian side have been noted.
He mentioned that Prime Minister Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah have taken a strong stance against infiltration, asserting that securing the international border in Tripura presents challenges due to difficult terrain, geographical factors, and unfenced areas. "There are still some sections along the border that remain unfenced, and the BSF is particularly vigilant in these regions. The force has been performing admirably in safeguarding the international border," Saha remarked.
In light of the unstable situation in Bangladesh, Eastern Army Commander Lt Gen R.C. Tiwari, along with Spear Corps Commander Lt Gen Abhijit S. Pendharkar and other senior Army officials, visited the India-Bangladesh border regions in Mizoram and Tripura on Friday to assess the security landscape and readiness.
Tripura Governor Indra Sena Reddy Nallu also visited border areas in the Sepahijala district last week, engaging with local residents and BSF personnel.
