Srinagar, December 22 (NationPress) - The Vice-Chancellor of Kashmir University, Nilofar Khan, has officially suspended an assistant professor for insulting the dignity of a female colleague and for criminal intimidation via social media.
This suspension comes in the wake of a police inquiry triggered by a complaint from a female associate professor who filed an FIR at the Nigeen police station in Srinagar against Altaf Ahmad Ganie, an assistant professor from the university's Kashmiri department.
The Vice-Chancellor's order, issued on Monday, states that Altaf Ahmad Ganie is suspended immediately while an investigation is underway.
The suspension was enacted under University Statute 3.16 (2) in conjunction with Regulation 12 (3) (IV).
During this suspension period, the associate professor will be attached to the office of the Dean of Research.
The Nigeen Police Station received an electronic application on December 9 from the female associate professor, accusing Shafqat Altaf, also an Assistant Professor in the Department of Kashmiri, and Farooq Ahmad Malik, an Assistant Professor at Government Degree College Anantnag, of distributing false, defamatory, and obscene material about her across various social media platforms.
According to the complaint, the content was shared with the intent to harm her reputation and violate her modesty, causing her to feel threatened and intimidated.
Based on her allegations, an FIR was registered at Nigeen Police Station under Sections 79 (Insulting the modesty of a woman), 351(2) (Criminal intimidation, aggravated form), and 356(2) (Defamation through electronic or other means) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), in conjunction with Section 67 (Publishing or transmitting obscene content in electronic form) of the Information Technology Act.
Vice-Chancellor Khan has cautioned all university personnel to avoid any behavior that violates the institution's rules and regulations.
