Srinagar, Feb 26 (NationPress) The Vice President of India, C.P. Radhakrishnan, is set to grace the 21st convocation of the University of Kashmir as the chief guest on Thursday. Preparations, including comprehensive security measures, have been finalized for the significant event.
A civic reception was hosted for the Vice President at Lok Bhawan in Srinagar on Wednesday night, which featured a cultural program highlighting the rich traditional folk dances and music of Jammu and Kashmir.
During the event, he will present his address at the University’s main campus located in the Hazratbal area of Srinagar.
The convocation will be presided over by Lt. Governor Manoj Sinha, who serves as the chancellor, with Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, acting as the pro-chancellor, attending as the guest of honour.
Other attendees include Sakina Itoo, the J&K Minister for Higher Education, Nilofer Khan, the Vice Chancellor, along with senior civil and police officials, deans from various faculties, department heads, faculty members, and students who are to receive their degrees.
KU Vice Chancellor, Prof Nilofer Khan, emphasized that the Vice President's presence signifies the increasing national acknowledgment of the University’s contributions to academia and research.
During the convocation, a total of 59,558 degrees will be awarded, comprising 44,910 undergraduate, 13,545 postgraduate, and 620 PhD degrees.
The University of Kashmir holds the title of the oldest university in J&K, boasting a NAAC A++ accreditation and ranking 34th in the NIRF rankings, placing it among the top eight State Public Universities in India.
Robust security arrangements have been implemented to ensure the safety and movement of VVIPs within Srinagar. All vehicles entering the city are subject to thorough checks, and the route for the Vice President's cavalcade has undergone multiple dry runs. Temporary checkpoints and drop gates have been established along the route to guarantee comprehensive security.
The traffic department has released a detailed advisory for the day, outlining restrictions and diversions designed to secure the event while minimizing public inconvenience. Medical emergencies will be exempt from these traffic restrictions, which will be in effect from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.
This marks C.P. Radhakrishnan’s first visit to the union territory since assuming office as the Vice President of India.
