Could Striker Viktor Gyokeres Signal the End of Arsenal's Title Drought in the Premier League This Season?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Mumbai, Dec 22 (NationPress) Arsenal last claimed the English Premier League title in the 2003-04 season and has been striving to reclaim it ever since. They have come tantalizingly close to the title in the past three seasons, finishing just behind Liverpool, who were crowned champions in the 2024-25 season. However, the Gunners' Swedish forward Viktor Gyökeres is optimistic that their lengthy title drought will conclude this season.
Currently, Arsenal holds the top position in the Premier League with 39 points from 17 matches, with Manchester City trailing by two points.
"We are all feeling positive. I have faith in the team's strong spirit and the encouraging atmosphere at our training facility. It's essential to keep that energy alive, to persist with what’s working, and to continue improving together every day. Presently, our focus is on winning the upcoming matches rather than fixating on the ultimate goals," Gyökeres shared in an interview.
In a discussion with JioStar, Gyökeres also expressed admiration for manager Mikel Arteta, highlighting his effective style of play.
"He is an outstanding manager, particularly regarding our playing style. His ability to comprehend the different personalities within the team and to adapt his approach to each player is equally vital. His determination and willpower to succeed motivate everyone. His energy is palpable not just during training but also before matches. That’s something we all genuinely feel," Gyökeres mentioned.
The 27-year-old forward is renowned for his relentless running during matches, which has significantly altered how opponents defend against Arsenal's attack. Previously, teams would double down on Bukayo Saka, but now Gyökeres has added a new dimension to the Arsenal offense.
"From my perspective, it’s easier to notice these dynamics from the outside. My focus is on executing the right actions on the field to assist the team and maximize my and my teammates' potential. Up to now, we have performed admirably this season. It's crucial to keep building on that momentum and to strive for continuous improvement," Gyökeres stated while speaking to JioStar.
Gyökeres joined Arsenal this season from Sporting Clube de Portugal and has netted five goals in 15 appearances thus far.
